Chapter 1 Introduction
Robert looked out on the horizon and sighed.
Where are they?
He thought.Sitting on the top of the 40-story building he waited for his friends to arrive. It wastheir weekly thing, come out to the top of buildings and talk. Just sit down and chat aboutwhatever. They hardly saw each other at school, and never saw each other outside. Theyhad too many responsibilities at home, and work for that matter. Once every week on aTuesday they would come out at 5 o’clock on one of the tallest buildings on theimmediate border of the town and wilderness.
 Jeese, I’m high up! Hmm, maybe I should go to that building. Yes, that one. I bet that’s where their waiting and looking over here at me like I’m and idiot.
He thought ashe scanned the horizon and saw another 40-story building.As he got ready to jump to the other building, a mere 5 feet away, short for his 6foot 4 inches, from the edge of the one on which he stood, he saw a flash of light out of the corner of his eye.Turning, he found that they
had 
come to this building. They were flashing the lightfrom a distance, but he saw that it was a regular flashlight, not red light, but white. Andthat was unusual.You see, they live in a different world, a world that is far away from ours, morelike an alternate universe in fact. It’s very much the same. But they are different in thefact that they are exposed to more supernatural things. In class, you learn about faeriesand vampires as a fact, not just myth. Faeries and vampires are the only supernaturalthing they have though, no God, not spirits, demons, nothing, and if there had been, it haslong been lost in the long line of millennia of their world. Just faeries and vampires.Which have been fighting for power for what seemed like the beginning of time to allhumans.They have been fighting for power, not over land, but over the humans. And that iswhy humans learn about them; to make sure they don’t become part of that struggle.
 
Faeries have different powers depending on their kind, only some of which can work onVampires. Dark faeries can tell you jump off a cliff and you’d do it if you looked intotheir eyes, also they can control fire – a very dangerous power. Earth faeries can tell allland animals to do anything, can control all plants, and can make it seem as though youhave no air to breath though you do, from which you stop breathing because of the mindtrick, but they are peaceful most of the time, so they do not use their powers often. Water faeries can use any body of water to their advantage, can tell all water animals to doanything, and can sing you a lullaby that will put you to sleep. Sky faeries can and
will 
 blind you so bad, through your own mind, that you could be blind forever if they do itlong enough, but that’s usually so that they can escape from you, and they have controlover anything in the sky, clouds, wind, lightening, birds, etc. They all live to be about 120years old, when dying from natural causes.And then the all-important Royal faeries can do all that others can, and which it istwice more the powerful, but they can only do that in small amounts, and not very often.Royal faeries also have strange powers that no other faeries have, each Royal faeryhaving it’s own unique power none will have again. Some powers are not so originalthough, like Mind Reading for example.Vampires are another subject completely. They are stronger and faster than mostfaeries, but the Royal ones keep them at bay from destroying all fae in their path. Beingresistant to faery powers that control the mind or have no physical bearing, they mustfight hand-to-hand with other faeries, where their strength comes in that the faeries cancall upon their powers over nature. They are never resistant to the unique powers of theRoyal Faeries though, for their powers always change, and so they cannot build upimmunity. Anyways, Vampires are usually pale, more in the extreme of outwardappearance. Either paper white, or ink black, depending on how close they had been toeach before being turned. Their eye colors vary on what type of faery blood they feed on,though all faery blood is the same sappy white.But why do they fight for control over the humans then? Good question, thatanswer has been long lost in the stars surrounding their world for a millennia. Theymostly fight because that is what they do, that is how they’ve been raised (in a certainsense of the word), and that is how it’s been for over 900 years.
 
Why must you know what they look like though? Well, in the classes about themthat the humans learn, that is how you can save yourself. How you can help not becomingone of them. For if you come in any physical contact with a Vampire, even just a brush of hair, you become one in the span of a day, and then you go out to live a life of vampirism.Which means, fighting, feeding, nothing in between except maybe a friend or two for convenience. But even though Vampire don’t sound like the friendly type, they will and
have
come together for something greater than them, to fight all faeries, defeat them, andrule over their world. Still, they have no idea why they should, but that belief has beeninstalled in every Vampire, and from the first to the last it shall. If there ever will be alast.How did it all start though? No one knows for sure, there are rumors that humans are thecause for a fight, and others say that humans aren’t. There is always a different storydepending on whom you ask.And well, that’s why humans learn, faeries have powers on their side, Vampireshave the ability to make humans another Vampire with just a tap. But faeries can breed,whereas Vampires cannot, so faery numbers don’t go down too much.As his friends approached, Robert looked carefully at their appearance.In their world, fashion is key to identifying if one was a Vampire or not. For somereason, Vampires just can’t get it in them to blend in, though they know they should.They always felt the urge to be different, stand out, like a billboard on the side of the roadsaying “HEY! I’m a Vampire! Come to me….” In this world, government has to keepchanging the trends, to keep the Vampires from actually
wanting 
to wear those clothes(because they would, after a certain amount of time for getting comfortable in it).Why the government you ask? Well, let me put it to you this way: if someone elsedid, they’d be construed for a Vampire, and once a Vampire is caught, they would beexterminated (burned). So the government decided on what trend should happen next,and designers got on it fast, making it appropriate, but still fashionable. Like trends, butdifferent.Robert looked from Sillya’s appearance to Jack’s. It was different, too different.And with that white flashlight…. 
Why in the world would they use something as bright as that?! Why not a penlight or something, or at least a light scarf over it!
He thought as he studied the flashlight.
