Preface
Bhagavad Gita is a well known ancient Sanskrit scripture with moral, psychological, cosmological and spiritual contents. It is part of the great epic,Mahabharat, that has more than 1,00,000 verses. Bhagavad Gita contains only 701verses that constitute the essence of profound knowledge given by Lord Krishna toArjun at the time of battle between the Paandavas and the Kauravas. The Hindi Bhagavad Gita was translated into Hindi poetic form and becamevery popular due to its musical flow and simple language. All the ideas of theoriginal Sanskrit text were kept intact in this verse by verse poetic rendering of theBhagavad Gita but the complexities such as the multiplicity of names to identifyLord Krishna and Arjun was avoided. The simplified Hindi Bhagavad Gita was translated into Spanish and has beenpublished in several editions. Now, an attempt has been made to translate it intoEnglish. Most of the Sanskrit/Hindi words have been trasnlated into plain English. However, a glossary is given after the main text to explain the meaning of non-English words. For convenience of those who want to read the Bhagavad Gita on weekybasis, it has been divided into 52 sections. Each section has limited verses andcoomprises one particular idea or theme. The weekly sequence is indicated on therelevent verse and also given in table form at the end of the book.Several people have helped in different ways before finalization of thisEnglish version of the Bhagavad Gita. I would like to express my thanks andgratitude to Nandita, Patricia, Penny Mataji, Laxmi, and Anne Glazier for theirvaluable assistance. My special thanks to Mora, my wife, whose translation of theBhagavad Gita into Spanish clarified many ideas and encouraged me to translate itinto English.VirendraRishikeshTop
