WHAT TO EXPECT for HIGHSCHOOL CHEERLEADING
High school cheerleading is something to look forward to. High school cheersquads bond throughout the year at cheerleading camp, games, pep rallies,practices, and other spirited events! Participating on a high school cheersquad is very exciting, although practices can be demanding of your timeand work ethic. In return for your hard work, you’ll experience crowds of cheering fans, become a role model to your peers, and gain friendships thatcan last a lifetime. Here’s what you can expect as part of a high school cheersquad:
TRYING OUT FOR HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADING
 Tryouts can be one of the most exhilarating and exciting time of year forhigh school cheerleaders. Depending on your school’s calendar, tryouts areusually scheduled anywhere between February and May. Sometimes squadshold tryouts in the fall, when everyone is back to school, but most choosetheir squad in the spring, so they can practice & prepare during the summermonths. Expect the tryout process to last at least a week. All high schooltryouts are different, but you can expect to start the week off with acheerleading workshop after school, where you will learn a cheer, a dance,and a sideline chant. Each day up until tryouts, you will practice to learn andperform the routines to the best of your ability. The week of tryouts is a goodtime to talk to the coach about her skills requirements and expectations forthe squad you’re trying out for.On the day of tryouts, get a good night’s sleep. Eat breakfast and lunch asnormal – you’ll need the energy boost for your afterschool tryout! Usually,you perform the routines you learned in groups of 3 or 4 in front of the judges. Be sure to dress neatly with your hair pinned back and out of yourface. Judges not only look for perfected motions and voice projection, butalso look at eye contact, poise and confidence in your routines. Onceeveryone has taken their turn in front of the judges, the score are tabulated
 
and the new squad will be posted up, called out, or announced via phone calllater that night.
OFF TO SUMMER CAMP
High school cheerleading camp is your new squad’s opportunity to bond, andlearn new material for use at your upcoming games, pep rallies andperformances. At camp, the instructors will teach cheers, chants, dances,and stunt technique, as well as give you pointers for team building andleadership once you’re back at school. Camp is usually 3-4 days long, andyour camp staff keeps you busy with activities morning to night. You canexpect to be exhausted after camp is over – with cheers running throughyour head non-stop! There are several types of camps available to high school cheer squads –Residential, or overnight camps is one option where your team travels to acollege or university for the 4 day camp experience with other squads.Another popular option is to hold a private camp at your own school’sfacilities. The professional cheer instructors travel to you and teach the campmaterial with more one on one instruction and focus. There are many othertypes of camps and workshops, and no matter which camp your teamdecides to go to, you’ll make tons of great cheer memories!
PRACTICES
High school cheerleading practices are usually held after school from 2-5times per week. They usually last a couple of hours, and can include stuntand tumbling practice, making posters and pep rally materials, practicingyour sideline chants or competition routine, depending on what your squadhas coming up. Practices for the first football game usually start in August,and if you’re on a high school cheer squad that competes, you’ll usually startyour competition practices in September or October for the fall/wintercompetition season.Practices may seem never-ending through the school year, but practice canbe some of the most memorable bonding experiences you’ll have as a highschool cheerleader.
GAMES & PERFORMANCES
Friday night lights became a popular phrase because of the excitement thatsurrounds the games. As a high school cheerleader, you get to be down nearthe field for all the action! The traditions, the cheering fans, the localcommunity and alumni will all be in attendance, and it will be your job to
