Expository teaching through the book of Proverbs is different that anyother book. I doesn’t lend it’s self to a particular story line that we canfollow and get the history on as we go through it. It seems to be a bookof short, powerful sayings all randomly put in a book with no particularorder. But a challenge is given by Solomon in Ecclesiastes 12:9
Ecclesiastes12:9
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the peopleknowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
If you’ve ever been to a parade, when you are standing on the streetwatching the parade, you are only seeing what’s right in front of you.But if you were to get in a helicopter and look down on the entireparade as a whole, you’ll get a bird’s eye view and see the parade in awhole different light. You should keep a journal on the book of Proverbs, and record acommon theme that you see in every individual chapter. Then, whenwe get to the end of the book of Proverbs, we should look at the themeof every chapter as it brings us to the end of the book of Proverbs andGod will reward the diligence of every student of the bible who studiesHis Word with attentiveness.
II Timothy2:15
Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to beashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Proverbs 10:4
He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligentmaketh rich.
Proverbs21:5
The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that ishasty only to want.
As we go through Proverbs, we are going to read each verse, anddiscuss how it applies to our lives and how it is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. Then when we getto the end, we are going to get a bird’s eye view of the entire book, and you’ll find out that it is a story that progresses. You’ll see the story

of the life of a young man who is being trained by his parents to be aking.Parents in the past trained their children by passing down their wordsof wisdom from generation to generation. When we read the book of Proverbs, we not only get the benefit of reading the words of wisdom that King David passed down to Solomon, and Solomon passed down to his children, we get a first hand look atparent to child training that has been inspired by God.
II Timothy3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
II Timothy3:17
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all goodworks.
Solomon was a collector of dark sayings or Proverbs, so there is nodoubt that much of the words of wisdom that was collected stemmedall the way to our first parents, Adam and Eve. The first and great commandment that Jesus refers toMatthew 22:37 includes teaching our children diligently the word of God.
Deuteronomy6:4
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
Deuteronomy6:5
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with allthy soul, and with all thy might.
Deuteronomy6:6
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
Deuteronomy6:7
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way,and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Deuteronomy6:8
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be asfrontlets between thine eyes.
Deuteronomy6:9
And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
We are instructed to train and teach our children so that they canteach their children, so that they can teach their children, and thosechildren can teach their children from generation to generation.
Psalm78:5
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which hecommanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
Psalm78:6
That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:
Psalm78:7
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, butkeep his commandments:
