Keep in mind three things when we read the book of Proverbs:1.This is parental training. We are looking at parentaltraining that King David passed down to his children, and KingSolomon passed down to his children, and we be getting someincite of parental training that dates back as far as Adam.2.The book of Proverbs is devoted to moral instruction.

 These dark sayings collected by King Solomon are theinspired word of God.
Honoring A Fathers Teaching
A. Keeping his commands (Proverbs 3:1-4)
Proverbs 3:1
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep mycommandments:

 The word “law” (torah) often refers to the law of God. Here it refers tothe fathers teachings, but the sanction to remember the father’s law
 
stems from the premise that the father’s law is based on the law of God.Deuteronomy 6:3-9And the promise is:
Proverbs 3:2
For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall theyadd to thee.Proverbs chapter 3 starts out with the first commandment with apromise:
 
Exodus20:12
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the landwhich the LORD thy God giveth thee.
First promise - For length of days, and long life,
Ephesians 6:1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Ephesians 6:2
Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
Ephesians 6:3
That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
We know that good people die young at times, when the HeavenlyFather decides to bring them home early. But as a general principalthose who follow godly wisdom of their parents do not subjectthemselves to the influences that shorten and destroy their lives likedrugs and promiscuous sex.Second promise - and peace, shall they add to thee.
