Chapter 23
Proverbs 23:1
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, considerdiligently what is before thee:

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given toappetite.

Proverbs 23:3
Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitfulmeat.
The sin that we’re warned against is the over indulgence of luxury and sensuality,and the indulgence of the appetite in eating and drinking, a sin that most easily surrounds us.
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is beforethee:
 When we enter into temptation, we are in the most danger of falling into this sin: And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.Temperance and moderation is the key:
"Put a knife to thy throat,
that is, restrainthyself, as it were with a sword hanging over thy head, from all excess.

 Adjective
- Especially pleasing to the taste;It is lust that is desirous of dainties, and we cannot in faith pray for things that we aregoing to consume on our lust. The things that we lust for are not food convenient formind, body, or estate. They are deceitful meat, and therefore David, instead of praying for them, prays against them,
Psalm141:3
Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.
 We ought to observe what our own iniquity is, and, if we find ourselves addicted toflesh-pleasing, we must not only stand upon our guard against temptations from without, but subdue the corruption within. That is temperance.

 The Pharisees had an evil eye and always tried to trap Jesus into breakingtheir laws so that they could bring him up on charges.
