Of Marriage1.Marriage is to be between one man and one woman; neither is it lawful forany man to have more than one wife, nor for any woman to have more thanone husband at the same time.

Genesis

2:24

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife:and they shall be one flesh.

Malachi2:15

And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one?That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none dealtreacherously against the wife of his youth.

Matthew19:4

And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them atthe beginning made them male and female,

And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to hiswife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

2.Marriage was ordained for the mutual help of husband and wife,

Genesis2:18

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make himan help meet for him.

for the increase of mankind with a legitimate issue,

Genesis1:28

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenishthe earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

and for preventing of uncleanness.

I Corinthians7:2

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let everywoman have her own husband.

I Corinthians7:9

But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

3.It is lawful for all sorts of people to marry, who are able with judgment togive their consent;

Hebrews13:4

Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers andadulterers God will judge.

I Timothy4:1

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from thefaith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath createdto be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

yet it is the duty of Christians to marry in the Lord;

I Corinthians7:39

The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband bedead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.

and therefore such as profess the true religion, should not marry with infidels, oridolators; neither should such as are godly be unequally yoked, by marrying withsuch as are wicked in their life, or maintain damnable heresy.

Nehemiah13:25

And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and pluckedoff their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughtersunto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

Nehemiah13:26

4.Marriage ought not to be within the degrees of consanguinity or affinity,forbidden in the Word;

Leviticus18:1

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Leviticus18:2

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus18:3

After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after thedoings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall yewalk in their ordinances.

Leviticus18:4

Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am theLORD your God.

Leviticus18:5

Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shalllive in them: I am the LORD.

Leviticus18:6

None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.

Leviticus18:7

The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover:she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.

Leviticus18:8

The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness.

Leviticus18:9

The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or daughter of thy mother,whether she be born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt notuncover.

Leviticus18:10

The nakedness of thy son's daughter, or of thy daughter's daughter, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover: for theirs is thine own nakedness.

Leviticus18:11

The nakedness of thy father's wife's daughter, begotten of thy father, she is thy sister,thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.

Leviticus18:12

Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's sister: she is thy father's near kinswoman.

Leviticus18:13

Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother's sister; for she is thy mother'snear kinswoman.

Leviticus18:14

Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's brother, thou shalt not approachto his wife: she is thine aunt.

Leviticus18:15

Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter in law: she is thy son's wife;thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
