Of the Lord's Supper1.The supper of the Lord Jesus, was instituted by Him, the same night whereinHe was betrayed, to be observed in His churches unto the end of the world,for the perpetual remembrance, and showing forth the sacrifice of Himself inHis death,

I Corinthians11:23

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That theLord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

I Corinthians11:24

And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body,which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

I Corinthians11:25

After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, Thiscup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, inremembrance of me.

I Corinthians11:26

For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's deathtill he come.

confirmation of the faith of believers in all the benefits thereof, their spiritualnourishment and growth in Him, their further engagement in and to all duties whichthey owe unto Him; and to be a bond and pledge of their communion with Him, andwith each other.

I Corinthians10:16

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

I Corinthians10:17

For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of thatone bread.

I Corinthians10:21

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

2.In this ordinance, Christ is not offered up to His Father, nor any real sacrificemade at all for remission of sin, of the quick or dead, but only a memorial of that one offering up of Himself by Himself, upon the cross, once for all;

Hebrews9:24

For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figuresof the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

Hebrews9:25

Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

Hebrews9:26

For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now oncein the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Hebrews9:27

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Hebrews9:28

So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for himshall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

and a spiritual oblation of all possible praise unto God for the same.

I Corinthians11:23

So that the popish sacrifice of the mass, as they call it, is most abominable, injuriousto Christ's own only sacrifice the alone propitiation for all the sins of the elect.3.The Lord Jesus hath in this ordinance, appointed His ministers to pray, andbless the elements of bread and wine, and thereby to set them apart from acommon to a holy use, and to take and break the bread; to take the cup, andthey communicating also themselves, to give both to the communicants.

4.The denial of the cup to the people, worshipping the elements, the liftingthem up or carrying them about for adoration, and reserving them for anypretended religious use, are all contrary to the nature of this ordinance, andto the institution of Christ.

Matthew26:26

But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

5.The outward elements in this ordinance, duly set apart to the use ordained byChrist, have such relation to Him crucified, as that truly, although in termsused figuratively, they are sometimes called by the names of the things theyrepresent, to wit, the body and blood of Christ,
