Monthly Periods

Have you started your monthly periods? Girlsare often shocked when they start their monthlyperiods. The scientific term is ‘menstruation’. Thisis when blood flows from the vagina. There isnothing wrong with you when this happens. Donot worry, you are just growing up.However, it is not a sign to start sex. When youstart menstruation it means you can easily getpregnant if you have sex. Ask your parent orguardian to help you. If you have not started yetand your friends have, do not worry. Yours willcome.
 Why some childrencommit crimes
S
ome children commitcrimes because ofpoverty and peer pressure. But that is not an excuse todo wrong things.Willington Ssekadde,Raising Voices says:
“Somechildren want to be like theirbad friends to fit in the group. Some children learn bad thingslike stealing after watching badmovies on television. Be happywith what you have and who youare.”
Not fearing God
Nafuna Janet, 12,Nampanga PS, Sironko,says:
“Children brought up infamilies with no religion don’t fearGod. They don’t follow the tenCommandments. When they growup, they risk their life by doingwrong things like not respectingelders and fighting.’’
 Alcohol and drugs.
Agodai Irene, 13, P5,Majengo PS, Soroti says:
‘‘Some children takemarijuana andalcohol. Thismakes themsteal and evenrun away fromschool. Theyend up joiningbad groupswhere they may get arrested. Myfriend stole a chicken and wastaken to Mbale Remand home.’’

FOR  TE A CHERS:
Snakes and ladders
Play the game and learn how to avoid crime
 How to play:
Get a dice and bottle tops. Throw the dice on the board inturns. The first to get six dots up the dice starts to play. Start from square
1
. Each player moves the bottle-top according to the number of dots seenafter the dice is thrown on board. For example if four dots show up, movefour steps ahead. If you land at the bottom of the ladder, read the words aloud to your friendsand move your bottle-top up the ladder. If you land on the snake head, youhave been bitten by the snake. Read the words aloud. Move down until youreach the tail of the snake. You will continue from this point to move up-wards when your turn comes. If you enter a square taken by another player,it means you have eaten him or her. He or she has to start again from square
1
. If you land on a square with words only, stop and read the words. Talk about them with your friends before you continue.
The first person toreach FINISH point is the winner.
Young Talk
is received by a particular teacher. When he receives thecopies he distributes to the P5, P6 and P7 class-teachers. Childrenread and discuss with teachers and among themselves. They also ask questions and put them in the suggestion boxes. Every class has asuggestion box made from chalk boxes. The questions are collected and answered at the assembly either bypupils or teachers. We also encourage pupils to take
