Andy Reid
and
Mike Holmgren
have a longstanding friendship thatbegan years ago. Maybe that’s why you see so many similaritiesbetween the two. There’s the mannerisms, the presence, and thewest coast offense. There’s the mustache, but most importnantly, there’s the success. The two first worked with eachother on LaVell Edwards’ 1982 BYUcoaching staff. Reid was a first-year grad asst., while Holmgren wasa first-year QBs coach.Reid moved on the following season to take over as the offensivecoordinator at San Francisco St. in 1983, a position that Holmgrenhad held in 1981.Holmgren remained at BYU until 1985, but in 1986 both coachesmoved on. Reid took over the offensive line at Northern Arizona andHolmgren replaced him in the Bay area that year as he became theSan Francisco 49ers QBs coach. As Reid moved from Northern Arizona to Texas-El Paso (1987-88) andthen on to Missouri (1989-91), Holmgren stayed planted in the NFLwith the Niners. It wasn’t until 1992 when Holmgren got the head coaching call toGreen Bay, that the two of them would work together again.Reid began his pro coaching career when Holmgren took over inGreen Bay. He remained with him through the 1998 season until tak-ing the head coaching job in Philadelphia. While working underHolmgren, he began as the tight ends/asst. offensive line coach andeventually became his quarterbacks coach (1992-98).
