When an irrational belief  becomes a demand the problem is formed. Theclient gives a negativedefinition to a circumstancewhich affects their moodultimately affecting their reaction and interactions.REBT is defined by theclient’s thoughts and values.Any unresolved problems that anindividual faces inhis/her current familysystem that is beingtransferred from thefamily system in whichthey were raised.The problem is formedwhen the family as awhole does notunderstand which rolesthey should play andhow to interact. The problem is in the root of the structure of thefamily system.Problems developwhen change or transitionalcircumstances areencountered by anindividual. Focus onthe processsurrounding the problem andineffective attempts tochange it.With every problem there isan exceptioneither actual or  potential.Helping theclient torecognize the potentialexceptions tothe negativerule or idea aidsthe healing process. The problem is notnecessarilyrelated to thesolution or viceversa.When a persondefines their life by dominantstories they recallabout their experiences.These stories become the“rules” affirmingtheir beliefs. If these storiesaffirm a negative belief, then that person’s outlook on life will yieldnegativeinteractions. The person sees self as the problem.The Inability torecognize theexceptions to aDominant Storycause issues inlife development.Eliminating theconcept of familysystem and particularlythe idea that the systemcreates the problem(biological & socialsystem) predeterminedsocial system thatcreates the problem.The language about the problem is what causesthe problem and thesystem of treatment iscreated.
 
There is no problem until someone begins to talk about it.Therapist sees the problem as an ongoingrevolving languagesystem- when thetherapist participates inthe language you become a part of thesystem.
Change 
Replace irrational beliefswith more stable, hopeinspiring Rational beliefsoffers the client the ability tostop negative cycles.
 
Clearly identify theindividual’s problemfrom family of origin.Once identified, a simplechoice is made whether to continue to perpetuatethe problem or eradicateit in the current familysystem.The family must changeto maintain stability.Also, change occurs atthe subsystem level andis a result of manipulations by thetherapist of the existingsubsystems andmaintained by itsgreater functionality andresulting changedframes of reference and positive feedback 
.
Interrupting the patternof the ineffectivesolution attempts.The change process isorganizedaround helpingclients identifyand amplifyexceptions tothe problem. “Noone loves me!”the client maysay. “Can youthink of anytime whereanyone at allshowed youlove?” thetherapist wouldask.Replace thedominant storywith a more preferred story byfocusing onexceptions and placing VALUEon positivestories over negative ones.Language Systemsversus Social Systems.Keeping theconversation going,create space to beentertained so there arenew possibilities,alternative perspectives.
Techniques 
Disputing your irrationalideas; gathering exceptionsor other information toreduce the “must” from theclient’s assumptions;Balancing thoughts byMeeting with the entirefamily to share their viewof the problem.
