How World Views Affect Marriage & Family SystemsBy Te-Erika PattersonBarry UniversityFall 2010Marital & Family Systems

What are Marriage & Family Systems?
If we held a single piece of cardboard between our fingertips and examinedit, we may notice that it is 2 inches in length and 1/10 of an inch in length. We may also notice that the edges are smooth and rounded. There seems tobe a pattern of some sort, however, the flat surface isn’t wide enough todetermine if it is representative of a particular image. In another room, asmaller set of hands grip a similar piece of cardboard. The handler notices itssmooth surface and ambiguous pattern but cannot quite make out what itsfunction is. Outside, under the late afternoon sun, a third party notices asimilar piece of cardboard and examines it curiously.Once all 3 individuals meet together to share their discoveries, they find thateach piece of cardboard fits together, forming a perfect picture. This is thebasis of the family systems theory. Each individual in the family cannot bewholly understood in separation from the others. In romantic relationshipswhich become the nucleus of any family system, we must examine theoriginal puzzle pieces that were once conjoined to accurately understandhow the piece fits in the new puzzle. The family systems theory, first introduced by Dr. Murray Bowen thatsuggests that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from oneanother, but rather as a part of their family, as the family is an emotionalunit. Families consisting of interconnected and interdependent individualscannot be understood in isolation from their interactions as a unit.

How are world views formed?
Every person has a world view which was created as a result of socialconditioning from birth. Our parents play the role of interpreter, offeringexplanations about each encounter we have with the world. We come toview the world through the eyes of our parents and both positive andnegative perspectives are passed along. Their coping methods are imitatedas well as their reactions to life situations. We teach our children the ideas of racism, classism and even fear.A worldview is akin to a set of lenses which taint the way we perceive theworld around us. Our worldview is also influenced by our education, theculture we live in, the books we are exposed to and the entertainment weenjoy. Many have never given significant thought to determine what theybelieve and therefore are unable to give a rational defense of their beliefswhen challenged.
