To resist these environ-mental changes, the fibers of the Teak treebend rather than break. The trees can growto as much as 40 meters (130 feet) tall andoften live up to a 100 years.
Characteristics of Teak
Teak is a hard wood that has a natural tightgrain with thick fibers which mill evenlywithout chipping or splitting. Teak naturallycontains oil in its heartwood that is waterresistant and helps prevent attacks fromdecay, insects and bacteria. This oil alsogives Teak its characteristic gleam. In addi-tion to its oil content, Teak is known for its slipresistant surface. This is also a result of theenvironment in which it is grown. The landon which Teak is grown has a high sandcontent which is absorbed into the body ofthe tree as it grows.
Burmese Teak vs. Plantation Teak
As with most woods, there are differentqualities of Teak, based in part on wherethe Teak is grown and which part of thetrunk is used. For the most part, PlantationTeak is harvested from trees that are 5 to 10years old while non-plantation BurmeseTeak is harvested from trees 25 to 50 yearsold, allowing the trees to grow longer result-ing in higher oil and sand content, often asmuch as 800% more.
