E.L. Beck lacks the experience of trusted political experts such as Rush Limbaugh (disc jockey), Bill Maher (stand-up comedian), Glenn Beck (disc jockey and no relation), or Keith Olbermann (sports announcer). Yet, insightful social criticism can emanate from anyone, from the esteemed Thomas Paine (corset maker, naval mercenary, tobacconist) to Jane Jacobs (journalist). Ever intrepid, Beck made a 20-year career of journalism and writing after graduating from Purdue University, covering business and, in particular, the automotive industry. Losing touch with reality, Beck interrupted his work and returned to school, taking a master’s degree from the University of Chicago, concentrating in economic sociology. After graduation, rather than culling second-hand interpretations off the web, Beck found the audacity to research the original writings of the 17th and 18th century political and economic philosophers that influenced America’s founders, as well as the writings of the founders themselves. The insights Beck gained from this intellectual journey presented more opportunities than a career as a contemporary corset marker, but not by much.
