Classical Real-world Population Calamities - Three examples
For all participants in the PLANET UNDER PRESSURE conference in March, 2012. How our innate or instinctive "VAST OPEN-SPACE" suppositions may be about to carry the whole of humankind, civilization, and earth's biosphere beyond environmental and carrying capacity thresholds that should not be transgressed. This article documents AND QUANTIFIES three separate and classical examples of population-environment catastrophes and mass die-offs in environments that VISUALLY APPEARED TO REMAIN ALMOST ENTIRELY EMPTY. The lesson for humankind appears to be that "just because there is space doesn't mean we are safe."

The factor that makes today's generation of "under-20s" the single MOST POWERFUL generation (at such a young age) in the history of our species. Population momentum that could carry the whole of humankind to 15.8 billion worldwide by the end of this century? That is population momentum on steroids. What is the recipe for such momentum? Half of a classical recipe is an enormous portion of the population that is less than 20 years old (which is already 50% throughout many of the world's poorest and least-developed nations). Note that members of this enormously large generation are now beginning to approach their 20th birthdays... and their childbearing years. The other half of the recipe involves very high fertility rates. What happens if this rising generation follows, on average, exactly the same fertility decisions and pathways that currently prevail in their nations? A population J-curve graph - on steroids This article explores the data sets, trajectories, and their implications.

World population grows by an additional "billion" every twelve to fifteen years - How large is this number? And what implications does it have for civilization, biodiversity, and our environment? This document answers such questions (with one approach for students and educators and, for academia, a second approach that employs theoretical physics) - Hint: In either case, the answer is 38,461 years.

PowerPoint number four Biospherics 101, presentations, and workshops. Earth's seemingly-immense oceans, atmosphere, and seas are, in planetary and mathematical terms, actually razor-thin surface films. Astronauts and cosmonauts taking photographs from space have likened earth's atmosphere to a single layer of skin on an onion. And mathematically speaking, earth's oceans are only 6/100ths of 1% as thick as the earth itself. So what impacts are humankind's numbers having on these components of the only planetary life-support machinery so far known to exist anywhere in the universe? Important and provocative - and entirely free for use by scientists, students, and educators anywhere in the world.

Why 10% conservation goals ARE NOT ENOUGH. Imagine a team of astronauts who begin to systematically destroy, disassemble, and degrade 90% their spacecraft's guidance and propulsion systems, 87% of its heat shields, 73% of its temperature and cooling systems, 87% of its CO2 scrubbers, 67% of their computer codes, 81% of their electrical systems, and 90% of the rest of its mechanical and life-support systems. In a similar way, imagine the owner of a pristine automobile who begins to systematically eradicate its carburetor and spark plugs, half of its tires and axles, destroy 87% of its steering system, 92% of its fuel filters and electrical systems, and wo methodically adds contaminants each day to its radiator, oil, battery, and transmission and brake fluids, and that then this individual cannot understand why his automobile, which "has always worked in the past," doesn't function anymore. NOT SO BRIGHT, IS HE? (Do we know anyone who seems to treat the ONLY planetary life-support machinery so far known to exist anywhere in the universe in a similar way?) No rational astronauts, of course, would ever dream of inflicting such damage upon the vehicle that maintains their lives in space, and the rest of us would never inflict such damage upon our automobiles. Yet we seem to suppose that we can treat earth's biospheric life-support machinery in a similar way and nevertheless expect it to continue to function as it has always done in the past.

How near-term momentum (right-now) can lock us into calamitous and increasingly inescapable collision trajectories. If astronomers discovered a near-earth asteroid on a collision trajectory with our planet by 2100, NASA engineers and international space agencies would need to make immediate preparations to nudge the object away from its collision trajectory. Another trajectory has just appeared that may promise an equally-dangerous collision by century's end and had best receive our attention now. (Caution -: If you notice or experience symptoms of a J-curve, it is important to contact your local physicist immediately!)

The earth's atmosphere and seas seem quite immense, but mathematically speaking, they are exceptionally thin surface films that are just 6/100ths of one percent as thick as the earth itself. If we were to wipe a wet paper towel over the surface of a 30cm model globe, the layer of water it leaves behind would be proportionately TOO THIN to properly depict the average depth of the earth's oceans. Similarly, astronauts and cosmonauts taking photos of the earth from space have likened earth's atmosphere to a single layer of skin on an onion. Since it is easier to damage a thin film than we might otherwise imagine, the greenhouse gases that we empty into the earth's atmosphere and the spreading dead zones in the earth's oceans are more serious warning signals than they might otherwise seem.
