 Creating Electronic Tests with Examview
Examview is test generation software. It can be used by Instructorsto create investments from scratch. It has also been licensed byover 90 textbook publishers who have used Examview to createtextbanks that now accompany over 8,700 textbooks. Examviewtest banks can be printed. Examview test banks can also beimported into the CPS response pad software to be used with theCPS Response pads ( Clickers) But Examview test banks can also be delivered electronically either on a PC Lan, or via a website.
The ExamView Test Generator lets users easily create electronic tests that can betaken over the Internet with a browser or over a local-area network (LAN) with theExamView Test Player. To create an online test, build a test using the questionselection methods used to create standard ExamView tests. Once the test has beencreated there are currently two options available for online testing: LAN tests andHTML tests.
Creating LAN tests
Once you've created your test, select
Publish To > ExamView Test Player on LAN...
to create an online test that can be taken over your local area network (LAN) usingthe ExamView Test Player. If you choose to create an online test that will beadministered over a LAN, you can choose whether or not to record student results. If you choose to record results, the program will guide you through the process of how to set up classes and assignments with the ExamView Test Manager. Whenyou complete the process to create a LAN test, you will end up with a file with the.eot (ExamView Online Test) file extension. This file should be saved or copied to astudent-accessible network location in order to allow the Test Player access to it.Use caution with these files if students have completed the assessments, as any

damage or corruption to the .eot file will prevent you from obtaining the results.
Assigning and importing results from LAN tests
Once your LAN test has been created it will need to be assigned to a class beforestudents can take the assessment. To do this you can either choose the

icon pictured to the right or select
Create New Assignment
from theAssignment menu. This will start a wizard which will walk you through the stepsrequired to create and associate a test with your current class. Be sure to select thesecond checkbox for an

. Thenext step will be to locate the .eot file (typically stored on a network share) using afile browser. At this point you will need to have the .eot file stored in a locationstudents can access with the Test Player and are not planning to move the file toanother location. The Test Manager will reference this location when retrievingresults from the test file. Following this you will be prompted to choose securityoptions such as a password and restricted testing hours, followed by options for atime limit and question order. The next step in the wizard allows you to controlwhether students can check their work while completing a test and finally will present you with reporting options for the given assignment. The final step will be aconfirmation of the options you've selected and the option to either go back andchange selections or to finish and add the assessment to the Test Manager. After you've completed this
DO NOT MOVE THE .EOT FILE
. If the file ismissing then the software cannot retrieve responses and add them to your gradebook. Once responses have been collected from the .eot file, take care to saveand back up your work as they will no longer be available for acquisition. The .eotfile can be reused, but be warned that after repeated assessments the file can become corrupted and will not function correctly. It is advisable that you recreateyour LAN test if you need to present the assessment several times.
Aquiring Results
To acquire results from a completed LAN test, select the test in the Test Manager and either click the
Get Results from LAN Test
button pictured to the right or choosethe
Get Results from > LAN Test
option under the Assignment menu. This willaccess the .eot file and retrieve the results, entering them into your gradebook.Again, be warned that once these results have been obtained, they will no longer be

available so it is advisable to save your work afterwards. If your test contained anyopen-ended questions, you will be presented with the dialog shown to the right andwill have to manually grade them.
HTML Tests
Another online testing option is to create an HTML test. To do this, you will needto open an existing test or create a new test and choose
 Export > HTML...
from theFile menu. This will begin a short wizard requiring a title and choice betweencreating a study guide or a test. If you choose the option to create a test, you willalso be required to provide a name and email address. Once completed, you will be prompted to save the HTML file and can upload it to a remote location such as awebserver or network share. Take caution with these files though, as more savvystudents could access the HTML code, alter it to include their own email addresses, and save the file locally, allowing them to have the results sent to their emailaccount and, through enough trial and error, can determine the correct responses. These files also are portable, and can be used multiple times without having torecreate them.If you need further assistance with eInstruction products, please visit our website atwww.einstruction.com or call us at 888-333-4988 to speak with a technical supportrepresentative. This article can also be found on the eInstruction Knowledge Base:http://kbnew.einstruction.com/display/2n/index.aspx?c=&cpc=&cid=&cat=&catUR L=&r=0.961111068725586 Learn more about Examview on the Einstruction website :http://www.eInstruction.com/products/examview
