ThesenotesareintendedtobeofusetoThirdyearElectricalandElectronicEngineersattheUniversityofWesternAustraliacomingtogripswitComplexFunctionTheoryTherearemanytextbooksforjustthispurpose,andIhaveinsucienttimtowriteatextbook,sothisisnotasubstitutefor,say,MatthewsandHowell's 
ComplexAnalysisforMathematicsandEngineering 
,[1],butperhapscomplementtoit.Atthesametime,knowinghowreluctantstudentsaretuseatextbook(exceptasatalismantowardoevil)Ihavetriedtomakthesenotessucient,inthatastudentwhoreadsthem,understandsthemanddoestheexercisesinthem,willbeabletousetheconceptsandtech- niquesinlateryears.Itwillalsogetthestudentcomfortablythroughthe examination.Theshortnessofthecourse,20lectures,forcoveringComplex Analysis,eitherpresupposesgenius(90%perspiration)onthepartofthe studentsormaterialskipped.Thesenotesareintendedtollinsomeofthe gapsthatwillinevitablyoccurinlectures.ItisasourceofsomedisappointmenttomethatIcancoversolittleofwhatisabeautifulsubject,richiapplicationsandconnectionswithotherareasofmathematics.Thisis,then, asortofsampler,andonlytouchestheelementsStylesofMathematicalpresentationchangeovertheyears,andwhatwas deemedacceptablerigourbyEulerandGaussfailstokeepmodernpuristcontent.McLachlan,[2],clearlysmartedunderthecriticismsofhispresen- tation,andhegoestosometroubletoexplaininlatereditionsthatthebook isintendedforadierentaudiencefromthepuristswhodamnedhim.Mexperienceleadsmetofeelthattheneedforrigourhasbeendevelopedtthepointwheretheintuitiveandgeometrichasbeenstunted.Bothhavepartinmathematics,whichgrowsoutoftheconictbetweenthem.Butiseemstomemoreimportanttopenetratetotheideasinasloppy,scruy butserviceableway,thantoreduceasubjecttopredicatecalculusandomithewholereasonforstudyingit.Thereisnoknownmeansofpersuadinghardheadedengineerthatasubjectmeritshistimeandenergywhenithas beenturnedintoanelaborategame.He,orincreasinglyshe,wantstoseetwelementsatanearlystage:proceduresforsolvingproblemswhichmakedierenceandconceptswhichorganisetheproceduresintosomethingintelligible.Carriedtoexcessthisleadstoavoidanceofabstractionandconsequent 
 
lossofpowerlater;thereisagoodreasonforthepurist'sdesireforrigourButitaskstoomuchofathirdyearstudenttofocusontheunderlyinglogiandomitthegeometryIhavedeliberatelyerredintheoppositedirection.Itiseasyenoughforthe studentwithatasteforrigourtoclarifytheideasbyconsultingotherbooksandtowindupasalogicianifthatishischoice.Butitishardtonditheliteratureanyexplicitcommitmenttogettingthestudenttodrawlotofpictures.Itusedtobetakenforgrantedthatastudentwoulddothasortofthing,butnowthattheschoolsyllabushashadEuclidexpunged,the undergraduatescannotbeexpectedtoseedrawingpicturesorvisualisingsur- facesasanaturalpreludetocalculation.Thereisaschoolofthoughtwhicconsidersgeometricvisualisationasimmoral;andanotherwhichsanctionsionlyifdoneinprivate(andwashyourhandsbeforeandafterwards).Tommindthisimposessterility,andconstitutesanattemptbythebureaucrattstrangletheartist
WhileIdonotwanttoimposemyinformalimagesoanybody,ifnomentionismadeofinformal,intuitiveideas,manystudentneverrealisethatthereareany.AllthegoodmathematiciansIknowhaverichsupplyofinformalmodelswhichtheyusetothinkaboutmathematicsanditwereaswelltoshowstudentshowthismaybedone.Sincethisseemtobetherespectinwhichmostofthetextbooksareweakest,Ihaveperhaps gonetoofarintheotherdirection,butthen,Idonotoerthisasatext book.MoreofanantidotetosomeoftheothersIhavetalkedtoElectricalEngineersaboutMathematicsteaching,andthey arestrikinglyconsistentinwhattheywant.Priortotalkingtothem,fearedthatI'dndEngineerssayingthingslike`Don'tbotherwiththeideasforgetaboutthepictures,justtrainthemtodothesums'.Thereare,alasMathematicianswhoareconvincedthatthisishowEngineersseetheworld, andIhadsupposedthattheremightbesomethinginthisbelief.SillymeInfact,itissimplyquitewrong. TheEngineersIspoketowantMathematicianstogetacrosstheabstracideasintermsthestudentscangraspanduse,sothattheEngineerscasubsequentlyrelyonthestudenthavingthoseideasaspartofhisorhe
