Foreword
 
elcome to the Monthly presentation organised by theDissemination Branch of the Central Statistical Office (CSO). The CSOembarks on vigorous information delivery strategy to majorstakeholders and the media institutions in order to increase utilisationof statistical products and services. The office produces a number ofstatistical products in the Economic, Social, Agricultural andEnvironmental areas. The information collected in these areas maybe used for various purposes including policy formulation, planning,implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes andprojects.This Monthly publication is an attempt to provide highlights of CSO’swork and how it can help media institutions and the general publicto make use of data and information for sustainable nationaldevelopment and decision-making.I would like to urge our readers and users of statistical information tosend to us any comments that may enhance statistical productionand contribute to the improvement of this bulletin.Ms. Efreda Chulu

INFLATION
 Inflation declines from 14.0 percent in February 2009 to 13.1 percent in March 2009
The annual rate of inflation, as measured bythe all items Consumer Price Index (CPI),reduced by 0.9 percentage points from 14.0percent in February 2009 to 13.1 percent inMarch 2009. The decline in the annualinflation rate in March 2009 was mainly due toreductions in the prices of food products suchas fish, kapenta, fresh vegetables, driedbeans, tubers, and alcoholic beverages.
Changes in annual inflation rates for CPI Main Groups
Between February 2009 and March 2009, theannual inflation rates reduced for foodbeverages and tobacco, furniture andhousehold goods, recreation and education,other goods and services, and increased forclothing and footwear, rent and householdenergy, medical care, transport (air fares andcost of motor vehicles).

Contributions of different Items to overall inflation
Of the total 13.1 percent annual inflation inMarch 2009, food products accounted for 6.8percentage points, while non-food productsin the Consumer Price Index (CPI) accountedfor a total of 6.3 percentage points.
The annual food inflation rate
The annual food inflation rate was recordedat 13.9 percent in March 2009. This is areduction from 16.3 percent of the annualfood inflation rate recorded in February 2009.Contributing most to the decline in foodinflation were reductions in the cost of fish,kapenta, fresh vegetables, dried beans,shelled groundnuts, tubers, cooking oil andalcoholic beverages. However, there wereincreases in the cost of other cereals andcereal products, meat, eggs, table salt, tea,coffee and other processed food products.
