CIGARETTE IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH

I.Purpose of the document
The purpose of the document is to establish a strong relation between cigarette smoking and itshazardous effect on human’s body. The document explains various situations in which, a person getsaddicted (or starts) to cigarettes and how it affects a person’s health directly or indirectly. It also talksabout who smokes, what makes it so hard to quit and the benefits of quitting cigarette.
II.Introduction
There could be a debate on consuming alcohol, that whether it’s good or bad for health but in caseof cigarette , there couldn’t be a debate. There is no benefit of smoking cigarette. It’s being said thatcigarette is nothing but a pinch of paper with fire at one end and fool at another end. Smoking cigaretteleads to various complexities in person’s private and professional life that may make life worse beforedeath.The United States Surgeon General's Report of 1982 reveals that "Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States." This statement is as true today as it was in 1982.Smoking is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States.
III.
Who smokes and why?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 44.5 million US adults werecurrent smokers in 2006 (the most recent year for which numbers are available). This is 20.8% of alladults (23.9% of men, 18.0% of women) -- more than 1 out of 5 people. When broken down byrace/ethnicity, the numbers were as follows:

African Americans -- 23.0%
•
Hispanics -- 15.2%
•
American Indians/Alaska Natives -- 32.4%
•
Asian Americans -- 10.4%In most of the cases, a person starts smoking in his/her teenage. There could be various reasons tostart smoking. Very common cause is to have fun. The curiosity of doing something new and adventurousmakes teenager to give a try to it. Many people do it for the sake of style statement. Seeing their rolemodel, actor or actress smoking on silver screen, put them in a very risky situation to start smoking and tocontinue it. Other contributing factor is family. Family, with a history of smokers or parents as a smokers put children of that family, at a greater risk to start smoking.
IV.Health effects of smoking
Each year about 438,000 people in the United States die from illnesses related to cigarettesmoking. Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegaldrugs combined. Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths. It is a major cause of cancers of the lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, pharynx (throat), esophagus (swallowing tubeconnected to the stomach), and bladder, and it contributes to the development of cancers of the pancreas,cervix, kidney, stomach, and also some leukemia.Other than cancer, smoking plays a major role in inducing other diseases in human’s body.Smoking can also damage a woman's reproductive health. Smoking may be also responsible for gumdisease, cataracts, bone thinning, hip fractures, and peptic ulcers. Smoking can drastically reduce thememorizing power of human being.
