Global Water Brigades (GWB)
designs andimplements water systems to prevent communicableillnesses in communities with limited access to clean water. Our current focus is in Central America where hundreds of student volunteers and engineers travel annually toimplement our community-based water projects with ourlocal partners. Our in-country team members work withwater experts and community leaders to design large scalewater systems for the entire community. Once the watersystem is blueprinted, volunteers work side-by-side withcommunity members to implement and provide theeducation for maintenance through the creation of “community water counsels.” Between brigades our in-country team insures that the water counsels are
Honduras
is the current focus of Water Brigades, wheremore than 3,000 annual student volunteers andprofessionals travel to implement clean water systems inunder resourced communities. Communities are selectedon an extensive study based on need, access to clean waterand include a collection of information to create baselinedemographic information.
Important Statistics about our Community Partners:
•
Typical families have less than 3 gallons of water perday to use
•
80% of population have been infected with parasites
A one week Water Brigade
provides volunteerswith the opportunity to make a tangible impact to improvewater access and quality in under resourced communitieswhile getting hands on experience in the field of engineering, sustainable development and remote watersystems. The Brigade begins with an introduction to theunderlying political, economic and geographical issues thathinder the communities from obtaining clean water.Subsequently, the group will travel to one of ourpredetermined villages to mobilize community membersand either begin or finish construction on a segment of anon-going water project. The brigade also involves volunteerconducted educational workshops for families aboutconservation of water usage and consumption, in the homes
