Our￿accounting￿&￿finance￿recruitment￿divisionfocuses￿on￿the￿recruitment￿and￿placementof￿mid￿to￿senior￿level￿finance￿professionalsinto￿the￿commerce￿sector.￿Some￿of￿thecompanies￿we￿recruit￿for￿include￿MNCsand￿local￿conglomerates￿covering￿themanagement￿consulting,￿FMCG,￿oil￿and￿gas,IT￿and￿telecommunications,￿manufacturingand￿retail￿industries.
Market￿Overview
Malaysian￿companies￿were￿on￿a￿relatively￿highrecruitment￿drive￿throughout￿most￿of￿2008.However,￿with￿the￿market￿slowdown￿towardsyear￿end,￿companies￿started￿to￿review￿theirrecruitment￿plans.￿Many￿companies￿adopted￿amore￿cautious￿approach￿to￿their￿hiring￿strategyand￿put￿more￿stringent￿controls￿around￿theapproval￿of￿headcount. This￿more￿cautious￿approach￿was￿noticeableacross￿many￿industries,￿particularly￿forcompanies￿with￿headquarters￿in￿the￿US￿andEurope.￿Although￿recruitment￿activity￿slowedin￿many￿organisations,￿hiring￿continued. This￿slowdown￿was￿particularly￿evidentin￿the￿FMCG￿and￿manufacturing￿sectorswhile￿the￿telecommunications,￿IT￿and￿oiland￿gas￿sectors￿were￿not￿as￿badly￿affected.Despite￿the￿more￿cautious￿stance,￿companiescontinued￿to￿map￿their￿growth￿through￿theacquisition￿of￿good￿talent.
Skills￿in￿Demand
Malaysia￿is￿the￿home￿of￿business￿processoutsourcing￿(BPO)￿for￿various￿MNCs,particularly￿for￿accounting￿and￿finance.￿In2008,￿we￿saw￿numerous￿shared￿servicesoperations￿setting￿up￿in￿Malaysia.￿This￿wasnot￿only￿due￿to￿lower￿infrastructure￿costs,￿butalso￿due￿to￿the￿competitivenes￿of￿local￿salarypackages￿and￿the￿high￿quality￿talent￿pool￿of Malaysian￿candidates. As￿a￿result,￿we￿experienced￿a￿strong￿demandfor￿professionals￿with￿shared￿servicesexperience.￿Professionals￿with￿costing￿skills,a￿SAP￿implementation￿background￿and/orbidding/pricing￿experience￿were￿also￿highlysought￿after.￿These￿rarer￿skill￿sets￿allowedcandidates￿to￿negotiate￿higher￿offers￿and,besides￿a￿premium￿salary,￿many￿companiesoffered￿other￿inducements￿such￿as￿sign-onbonuses.One￿strategy￿used￿to￿combat￿attrition￿was￿thecounter￿offer,￿but￿this￿proved￿to￿be￿more￿of￿atemporary￿measure￿to￿retain￿talent.Qualifications￿such￿as￿ACCA,￿CIMA,￿ICAEWand￿CPA￿continue￿to￿be￿in￿high￿demand￿andcompanies￿were￿increasingly￿looking￿to￿recruitcandidates￿with￿overseas￿experience,￿forexample,￿in￿US￿GAAP￿and￿Sarbanes-Oxley.
Outlook￿for￿2009
Despite￿the￿recruitment￿slowdown,￿weanticipate￿salaries￿will￿continue￿to￿increasealbeit￿at￿a￿slower￿rate￿compared￿to￿the￿pastfive￿years.￿Roles￿which￿are￿business￿critical￿orin￿strong￿demand￿will￿continue￿to￿command￿apremium.In￿2009,￿we￿expect￿an￿increased￿demand￿forshared￿services￿professionals￿as￿companieslook￿to￿relocate￿roles￿to￿take￿advantageof￿lower￿operating￿costs￿in￿Malaysia.￿Theincrease￿in￿the￿number￿of￿returning￿Malaysiansfrom￿Australia,￿US,￿the￿UK￿and￿other￿overseasmarkets￿will￿also￿serve￿to￿strengthen￿theexisting￿talent￿pool￿in￿Malaysia,￿giving￿localemployers￿more￿opportunities￿to￿hire￿strongcandidates.We￿also￿expect￿to￿see￿an￿increase￿incontracting￿roles￿as￿companies￿withheadcount￿restrictions￿look￿to￿supplementtheir￿permanent￿workforce.
