Multithumb and Joomla 1.5?

Cleanup of garbage code no longer useful or needed in Joomla 1.5 hastaken longer than anticipated, but I actually just sent the first release totesting outside this house. I want to have the worst bugs correctedbefore making it publicly available. However, I can now promise to havethe first alpha release ready for download within 4 days.And I mean it! :-)In the meantime, perhaps I should explain why it is so difficult to get thetime for developing Joomla extensions nowadays.Before the license change (or enforcement of it) last year, I hadcommercial plans with Joomla. I spent a lot of time developing mycommercial addons, and my free products were a spinoff of thisdevelopment.However, the addons I worked on are simply not suitable for GPL, so Iabandoned all commercial Joomla work. Hence, there is no spinoff anymore and I only work with Joomla occasionally.And never with J1.5 - except for converting my plugins :-)Multithumb is a multi-purpose image plugin for Joomla that can automatically create thumbnails and popups of the othe full-size images or add a watermark to them. It can even scramble the images names so that people cannot guelocations.For articles shown in blog mode, it can create a link from the first image to the full article for better user navigation.It can also create a simple photo gallery from any folder by just including one of the images from the folder and give i"mt_gallery" (or using the new tagging feature).Multithumb works with both normal images and {mosimage} images.See the examples and how-to's below for inspiration and instructions!

Processing images takes time!

Please note that when you use Multihumb for the first time on a given page, the server has to process all the imagesome time. This especially applies if you use the gallery function.This processing can lead to various server errors. If the error text says something about

memory size

, try increausing the backend option "PHP memory limit".If the server complains about

timeout

, change the maximum execution time using the similar named option. Try f seconds.

These settings are only effective if PHP safe mode is off!

Another remedy is to simply reload the page one or more times. For every reload Multithumb will process more improcessed, the page will load normally.

Note that some changes in the backend options might trigger a new image processing cycle. This is also the case if image cache by using the option "Clear cache on next page load".

NEW VERSION 2.0

Multithumb 2.0 is more versatile than ever. In fact, it is probably one of the most versatile and advanced mambots ever written. Remember, this is"just" a mambot, but it has capabilities you would expect only from full-blown components.Many of the new features are ideas and requests from users, like watermarks, resizing of full images, auto-galleries with image descriptions and linkto main article.

Most of Multithumb's settings can be overridden in the content by including the proper tags, like:{multithumb popup_type=greybox full_width=400} which will make Greybox the new popup style and images 400px wideThe override works until the end of the article or until it is overridden again.

There is even a handy online tool dedicated to creating the tags for you!

Multithumb is really becoming "multi". For example, it can now also process {mosimage} tags directly with all the features you have for normalimages. There is even a simple and yet powerful gallery function where all you have to do is to include any image from a given folder and give it thedescription (alt text) "mt_gallery". This triggers the mambot to generate a full blown photo gallery!Furthermore Multithumb 1.1 is much more configurable than before, and the layout of the admin interface is improved.Please note that some of the default values has changed, so take a look at the mambot admin and see if the values are as you want them. Now you can specify how many thumbnails are shown in a lightbox set. For example, you can have a slideshow with related 20 pictures, but only show the first one. When you click that thumbnail, the rest of the pictures will be be visible by using the Next or Prev buttons on the lightbox popup.

NEW IN VERSION 1.02

I found it inconvenient that Multithumb worked on all my pages. Although it is possible to tell it only to operate on images with a certain class, it is a bit tedious if you have many images.Now in version 1.02 there is a new option: "Apply only to tagged content" which means that Multithumb will only process pages containing thetag. The tag can be anywhere in the content, but it is more effective if you put it in the beginning.

Demos and how-tos

Simple thumbnail and popup

First select the desired thumbnail size and popup type in the backend, such as lightbox. Then include the image in theeditor in any way you like: directly with the editor's image icon or indirectly with the {mosimage} tag. Note that theimage will

not

be thumbnailed when you look at it in the content. This is normal, but you can resize the image in theeditor by dragging the corners if it bothers you. This will not affect the final result.If you give the image a description (alt text) this will be used as the image title.Below is shown how the image to the right is made with {mosimage}.
