THE NEED
The ability to communicate is key to self empowerment. There is a reason why slaveswere not allowed literacy.Addressing communication problems, and the unmet needs resulting, will increasepeople’s independence and their ability to make choices and contribute to society. It willalso reduce boredom, frustration, and in the long term, costly support. This applies across the whole range of apparent ability.Sensory and other problems can occur in all modalities of communication:Potential problems, especially but notexclusively, for autistic peoplespeechwritingsymbols /pictogramscomputer Phonology - sound processingIntonationPragmatics – practical meaningSemantics – logical meaningBody languageEmotion-in/outMotor coordinationTime pressure to respondAuditory overloadVisual processingSynchronised turn-takingRapid topic switchingBenefits of different modalitiesspeechwritingsymbols/pictogramscomputer Good impression on other peopleAttention from key people at a distanceAccess people who share one’s interestsAccess what everyone else accessesBeing genuinely includedLikely problem Possible problem Unlikely problem
