Grievance
According to Michael Jucius, ³ A grievance can be any discontent or dissatisfaction, whether expressed or not, whether valid or not, andarising out of anything connected with the company that anemployee thinks, believes, or even feels as unfair, unjust, or inequitable.´A grievance means
any discontentment or dissatisfaction in anemployee arising out of anything related to the enterprise wherehe is working.

t may not be expressed and even may not be valid.
I
t arises when an employee feels that something has happened or isgoing to happen which is unfair, unjust or inequitable. Thus, agrievance represents a situation in which an employee feels thatsomething unfavorable to him has happened or is going to happen.
I
n an industrial enterprise, an employee may have grievancebecause of long hours of work, non-fulfillment of terms of service bythe management, unfair treatment in promotion, poor workingfacilities, etc.

ature of Grievance

rievances are
symptoms of conflicts
in the enterprise. Just likesmoke could mean fire, similarly grievances could lead to seriousproblem if it is not addressed immediately! So they should behandled very promptly and efficiently.While dealing with grievances of subordinates, it is necessary tokeep in mind the following points:
A grievance may or may not be real.

rievance may arise out of not one cause but multifariouscauses.
Every individual does not give expression to his grievances.

orms of Grievances
A grievance may take any of the following forms:

actual:
When an employee is dissatisfied with his job, for genuine or factualreasons like a breach of terms of employment or any other reasons that are clearlyattributed to the management, he is said to have a factual grievance. Thus, factualgrievances arise when the legitimate needs are unfulfilled. The problem that he hasis real and not virtual

maginary:
When an employee¶s grievance or dissatisfaction is not because of anyfactual or valid reason but because of wrong perception, wrong attitude or wronginformation he has. Such a grievance is called an imaginary grievance. Though it isnot the fault of management, the responsibility of dealing with it still rests with themanagement. So the problem is not real.

t is in the mind or just a feeling towardssomeone or something. So be careful your grievances could be very muchimaginary!

: An employee may have dissatisfaction for reasons that are unknown tohimself. This may be because of pressures and frustrations that an employee isfeeling from other sources like his personal life.
I
am sure you will agree that if youhave fought at home and come to the institute, you cannot concentrate in the class.Similarly if you have had a bad day in the institute, that will reflect in the mood athome. We are all humans and are sensitive to the environment that we operate in!
