Inthisannualspeech,deliveredintheframeworkoftheGrandLodge2006(Rimini),the Grand Master Gustavo Raffi has dealt with the subject of the Masonic concep- tion of the Laical identity, to be considered as a common intercultural space, based on the sharing of some fundamental rules and principles, and not like a sort of “no man’s land” located between two antagonist armies. In this perspective, the Laical space must also be considered at the service of all the Churches and religious com- munities,becauseitdoesnotworkagainstthem.Onthefirsthand,theLaical

actually protect the neutral position of the State from any fundamentalism andfromthepretensionthatoneoranothertheologicalassumptionmaylegitimate theoppressionofotherpartsofthesociety.But,onthesecondhand,thesesame 
p r i n c i p i a
protect also the Churches from the State. Thus,thisimageof the Laical tolerance has nothing to do with any revival of the ideology of the “Ethical State”,and doesnot suggestany exclusionof the Religions from the culturaland moral role they can playin the modernsociety.But, in an open and multi-cultural com- munity,itisdifficulttoaccepttheideathatamodernStatecansubordinateitslaws and social rules to absolute patterns strictly determinedfrom a particular theolo- gicalorientationassumedinoneoranotherChurch,andwhichdonotrepresentthe general point of view of many citizens and for instance other minorities. For these reasons, the Grand Master has underlined the peculiar situation of Italy, where in particularin the field of bioethics,our Societyhas been compelledto accept “reli- gious laws”, which have been imposed to everybody.Anotherimportantitemhasbeenthatoftherelevantroletobeattributedtothe educative function of thePublic (in the sense of “belonging to the State”and not private)SchoolinItaly,intheframeworkoftheprogressiveconstructionofamul- ti-ethnicsociety.Infact,theSchoolis,nondoubt,theplacewherethecommon ideals of a free and laical society can be appreciated and transmitted, while, on the contrary, the Religious (private) schools cansupport theformation of antagonist communities, making the intercultural dialogue more difficult.The Laical ideals of Freemasonry areat the service of the social peace and mutual recognition,againstanyformofilliberalityandintolerance.Inthissense,the Grand Orient of Italy underlines its historical function as an association strongly rooted in the contemporary worldand not as akind of old-fashion club; we do not possessthefinalTruth,butwithanopen-mindedattitudearelookingforitthrough acontinuousprocessofmutualcorrectionandcontinuousimprovement.Our Masonic community is, in fact, not extraneous to the real problems and sufferance of the contemporary history, but, contrariwise, it tries to offer its intellectual and spiritualcontributiontotheedificationofamorepeacefulsocietywithoutanypoli- tical interference and, of course, in the limits of the old Landmarks.
