Liberia mines againIn 2011, ArcelorMittal’s first shipmentof iron ore left the shores of Liberia.The ore, mined from Tokadeh near Yekepa inthe Nimba mountain range, was transportedalong a 240 km rebuilt railway line, to therehabilitated port of Buchanan.This significant landmark is the culminationof five years’ work to restart the country’s ironore production.But commemorating the first shipmentis more than a celebration – we truly believethe development of Liberia’s iron ore industrywill contribute to the rebuilding of the nation’seconomy after two decades of instability.
