I’m green, wrinkled and old, having been around, oh, so many years. My earliest memory is coming to life on an assembly line. There must have been hundreds of us resembling rainbow colors and more – red, black, blue, grey and of course green – just like me. These were my siblings, though we knew in time we’d all be going different places.
My first home was the luggage section in a department store where as suitcases we came in all shapes and sizes. Some were overnight bags, others large two-suiters, and then there was me: of medium size with a dull green facing on my casing. I had wrinkles; in fact I was born with this finish, probably so I wouldn’t show wear and tear so readily.
The first day there on the floor in the store other suitcases ridiculed us as new arrivals. They made comments such as, Get used to it; you’ll be here a long time,
snidely remarking, Who would ever want you in their closet?
The brighter the color the less shame they showed in casting their dispersions. Perhaps this was an initiation of some sort, but regardless, I vowed never to treat others this way.
Customers want handsome luggage,
a deep-purple fold-over announced to no one in particular. We will make our owners happy as they retrieve us at airport carousels or haul us in to motels,
chimed in a bright red bag.
Then a grey suitcase reached out to comfort me, saying, and Don’t let the preening of these bright suitcases worry you. Many of them have been around here so long they fear being returned to the factory for re-dos.
You’ll know when the right customer comes in and spots you,
observed the off-white cosmetics bag. It’s all in how they handle you from the outset. You will see.
I found some comfort in this, wondering how long it would be before someone came looking for a medium-sized suitcase – actually one just like me. If they looked my way I knew I could sell them, wrinkled green covering and all. But alas, customers came and went. Often they purchased wallets. Some bought leather folders to hold legal or regular sized writing pads. I got to where
