I mean, who DOESN'T want to read a spot (or five) of marital rape in the morning? I sort of feel like this weird project of reading and then reviewing a bunch of romance novels is backfiring on my greatly. After the delightful first one with William Wallace, and then the super boring one that ended up being a DNF, and then the third venture, the fourth venture is one that actually made me vaguely nauseated in parts? WHY did I even bother finishing is the greater question?

I guess I lived in hope that somehow, someway something would justify the rest of the book. But nope. It's basically just a few hundred pages of, "I married you and so I get to have sex with you. In FACT, I will purposefully wait until you're asleep and have sex with you so that when you wake up you'll be so lost to pleasure you'll be inCAPABLE of saying no." Except then she DOES say no, and attempts to get away, and he's like LA LA LET's KEEP GOING.

It's essentially an entire novel of the hero of the story forcing himself on the heroine and insisting she must like it. I honestly don't even think there was even a shade of an actual plot. Mostly just a whole lot of rape.

I guess I outgrow historical romance. If I was younger I would have enjoyed this book but now I feel like it's too fake.

This is a story about two clans in war with each other, the leader of the most influential clan in the area Jamie falls in love with a the feisty chief's daughter Sheena. The whole book the couple fight and bicker, which was a bit annoying. This is a good story but not great. It reminds me of A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught.

    This book began promisingly enough.

The first half of the book was actually quite entertaining almost in the style of a Julie Garwood novel.

About, 150 pages in, though, everything unravels and the book becomes choppy, ridiculous, and just plain boring, "and no mistake" to quote a colloquialism that Lindsey repeats ad neauseam.

AUTHOR: JOHANNA LINDSEY is a Romance, Historical Fiction, Fantasy writer. She writes with a great balance of plot, dialogue, description of events. Not easy to get bored in her books. A GENTLE FEUDING is your typical Scottish Highlander fiction plot. Nothing new but a great read.SEXUAL EXPLICITNESS: Kisses. The following references: (1) manhood; (11) breasts; (1) thrust; (3) between her legs. That’s pretty much it. GENRE: Romance, Historical Fiction.SETTING: Aberdeenshire and Angusshire, Scotland 1541CENTRAL CHARACTERS: JAMES MacKINNION is clan leader. He is demanding, overbearing and has a bad temper. Having been previously married, he is unwilling to marry again unless he has first “tried” the woman. SHEENA FERGUSSON is favorite daughter of her clan’s leader and called the “jewel of Tower Esk” because of her beauty. She does not mind venturing off especially to swim which is a part of her “bathing” ritual at the glen near her home. She and her brother Niall are inseparable.SYNOPSIS: After years of peace, the feud is re-sparked after one clan is raided and crofters killed. The other clan retaliates. He secretly sees her splashing water as she bathes standing waist-deep in a pool. As a result, he is captured and held in the Fergusson prison. WHAT I LIKED: The two get so close in proximity but never meet. WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: Couldn’t the author given him a little more backbone than he had? Come on now!I give this book (3) stars. Just your typical Scottish Highlander fiction novel but nothing that makes it really stand out. Just a good historical romance read.

Best from Johanna Lindsay so far. Background of the feud where properly laid out in the introduction and conflict between protagonists is riveting.

When James MacKinnion sees the beauty in the secluded glen, he can't get her out of his mind. Sheena Fergusson bearly escapes marriage to the feared Laird of the MacKinnion clan. Only to find herself kidnapped and placed within his reach. Can the already smitten James convince Sheena to shed her fears and love him?I read and loved this when I was younger, and did not find it lacking now.
