About this ebook

A good cop, Robbie Brownlaw was thrown from a sixth-floor window of a downtown hotel and miraculously survived. The traumatic incident left Robbie with a fast-track career in the San Diego P.D.'s Homicide division . . . and a rare neurological condition that enables him to see people's emotional words as colored shapes—green trapezoids of envy, red squares of deception . . .

Another good man lies dead in a blood-splattered Ford Explorer—an ex-cop-turned-ethics investigator whose private life was torn open by unthinkable tragedy. Whether Garrett Asplundh's death was suicide or murder isn't immediately apparent—but it's soon clear to Robbie and his smart, tough partner, McKenzie Cortez, that Garrett had hard evidence of sex, scandal, and corruption spreading deep into local government. But pursuing the truth could prove more emotionally devastating than Robbie ever imagined.

I haven’t read any of Karin Slaughter’s other books but, if ‘Fallen’ is any indication, they are likely to hit the ground running and move on quickly from there. In the opening scene, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Investigator Faith Mitchell arrives at her mom’s home to find mom missing, a dead body in the pantry, Faiths’ baby daughter hidden in the tool shed and two gang-bangers mixing it up in the bedroom. Atlanta PD arrives on the scene three shots and two more dead bodies later to find an apparently intoxicated Faith pummeling the dead body of one of the gang members. The story develops from this unlikely beginning as Faith and her GBI partner Will Trent try to find out what happened to her mother and, more importantly, get her back if she is still alive. It is, for the most part, a plausible and engaging story, albeit fairly violent.Although ‘Fallen’ is part of a series, there is no dominant back story that makes it necessary to read the stories in order. I got a sense that there was some information that had previously been shared that in might be useful to know but it did not detract from my enjoyment of the story and it definitely didn’t reveal any spoilers from any of her other books. I hate that!Narrator Shannon Cochran does an excellent job of narrating ‘Fallen’ and keeping the reader engaged and enthralled in the tensest parts of the story. The review copy of this book was obtained from the publisher via the Amazon Vine Program.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Faith Mitchell is on her way to her mother's house to pick up her infant daughter. When she gets there she sees the door is open, blood on the frame, and loud heavy metal music is being played. She calls for backup and cautiously enters the blood splattered kitchen. The only person in the room is already dead, so she moves deeper into the house. In a bedroom she finds an Asian man holding a pistol to the head of a Latino. Within minutes, both men are dead. There is no evidence of her mother or her baby daughter.

She calls her boss, and her mother's close friend, Amanda Wagner, deputy director of the GBI who directs Faith's partner, Will Trent, to head up the investigation. He once investigated Evenly Mitchell, who had been captain of the APD's narcotics division until five years ago she was forced into retirement when five of her squad members were convicted of corruption and theft. Will Trent is a really intriguing character. He was raised by the state, never adopted, and has spent all of his career hiding his dyslexia. Amanda Wagner, a very dislikable character in much of this series, brings in an amazing group of woman to help, members of her “old gals network”.

The mystery in Fallen is explosive. Threads that had been left hanging in previous books were tied up in Fallen, but there are few left for books in the future. Karin Slaughter writes a very thrilling story and I've recently been rereading the series in audio. I really enjoyed this one and can't wait to get to the next book of the Will Trent series, Criminal, which is one of my favorites.

Unbelievably this is the first Karin Slaughter novel I have read. I have read one of her short stories before, which made me pick up this novel, so it wasn't like I didn't know that Slaughter had the goods in crime thrillers.

I quite enjoyed the slightly different take that Karin has on the crime thriller. Front and centre are a mix of slightly dysfunctional characters that somehow manage to not only work with one another, but are actually interesting to read about. You know how crime novels often have that self-loathing, alcoholic, dark and depressing lead character? Well this novel doesn't have that - thank his noodliness.

You can see why Karin is a bestselling author, so the only question is which of her novels I'll read next.

I started and finished this latest offering in Slaughter's Georgia series within 36 hours, all the while telling myself that I really should slow down a bit as there won't be another book in the series for quite some time. (I'm hoping there will be more, as I've grown quite attached to Will, Sara and Faith, and even to Amanda!). Slaughter is one of those crime novelists (Elizabeth George is another) whose writing, in my view, has improved with time. Sure, it's not great literature, but it doesn't set out to be. However, Slaughter creates sympathetic and believable characters, a good sense of place and plots that hang together well with just the right amount of suspense and not too many totally implausible twists. She is definitely one of my favourite modern crime writers. This novel will appeal much more to readers who have already come to know its central characters than to those wanting a jumping off point for exploring a new author.

Postscript: I'm adding to this review two days after originally writing it, because I find myself still thinking about the characters from time to time. I find lots of modern crime fiction disposable: something to read once and (hopefully) enjoy. I don't tend to re-read modern crime fiction novels because (a) something new always comes along and (b)the writing is very often not good enough to bother, even if the story was compelling at the time. To realise that Karin Slaughter's characters have stayed with me after I've finished reading the novel indicates to me that she really is a good writer, not just a good story-teller. At some point, this will definitely be worth a re-read.

Really good, unpredictable plot. Great assortment of characters. There was maybe a tad too much explanation of terms in places, but it makes it more accessible to readers who don't read many books in this genre.

When I picked this book out, I didn't realize that it was the third in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Series. But it worked very well as a stand alone book.I am not going to cover what happened since you can probably get that from other reviews. I just want to give you my impressions after finishing this book. I thought that the characters were very well developed, even the villians! I love getting background information and there was plenty of it. I didn't stay up all night with this book like other readers did. The pace for me was like a fast walk and then towards the end, the book was furiously racing. I found myself wanting less time with Faith Trent's partner Will Trent and more with Faith. But after reading the end of the book, I would like to know more about Will Trent. I found him very intriguing. I adored Will Trent's sense of humor and was amazed that he survived what seems to have been a very brutal childhood. His relationship problems had to be expected with his background. There is something engaging about a male character who doesn't know that he is fascinating! I also wanted more time with Faith's mother, Evelyn while I was reading the book. I imagine the experience of being kidnapped would be such an emotional harrowing experience that it would have been great to focus more on it in the book. I did enjoy this book. There were scenes of violence but not they were limited and not enough to scare me off. Twists were great, I did not except the secrets that were revealed at the end. I would recommend this book to any mystery fan who likes a great story without too much blood and gore. This book was received from GoodReads and in that fact in no way influenced the content of my review.

Dyslexia, diabetes, dysfunctional relationships and dirty cops are an unlikely mix but Karin Slaughter puts them together with a sure hand and in Fallen creates an interesting and relentless page-turner. She has developed a well-rounded cast of characters and attracted the attention and regard of the thriller-reading public, making her a best-selling writer – deservedly too since her books are a fine balance of action, intelligent plotting and entertainment.Slaughter’s fictional world is in Atlanta, Georgia, in which she has set both the Grant County [featuring trauma doctor Sara Linton] and the Atlanta series [with Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents Will Trent and his partner Faith Mitchell]: this book is the third in which she combines the threads, and her 11th full length novel, yet it reads well as a stand alone.Faith Mitchell’s mother Evelyn [a former member of the Atlanta police department] is kidnapped and mutilated, her house is ransacked and there are dead hoodlums on the property. Faith herself is under suspicion and battling to deal with her diabetes and her new-born daughter, so it’s up to her partner the dyslexic Will Trent, assisted by Sara Linton, to investigate. Drugs, gang politics, homicidal prisoners, police loyalties, family secrets, the old girl network and dogs, combined with the city of Atlanta and its suburbs, form a potent and exciting mix of elements that guarantee you will stay absorbed.

I enjoyed this book, it was a suspenseful read, but it really wasn't anything that I found out of the ordinary. When the mother of a Georgia Police Officer comes up missing in a bloody scene at her own home, Faith is relieved at finding her baby still there but determined to find her mother. Her mother's own police officer past may play a part in her disappearance which seems to have something to do with Mexican and Asian gangs. Faith is dealing with keeping herself healthy through the whole ordeal (shes diabetic) and taking care of her children. A group of friends in the right jobs (Amanda, detective; Will, Amanda's partner; Sara, a doctor) help Faith get to the bottom of the situation. Nothing really made me care about the characters, except for the vulnerable Sara and Will, I wanted to find out what happened, but wasn't really rooting for either side.

GBI agent Faith Mitchell is running late to pick up her baby after a training session and is worried that her mother isn't answering her phones. Her mother is a retired police captain who is always in touch with her family and friends and Faith's instincts are on edge. When she gets to her mother's house she is met with loud music and a figure watching out from behind a curtain. Worried for her mother and baby, Faith charges into the ransacked house and a hostage situation turns violent. This is such a great thriller with all of the twists and turns that I love. This is the 9th book in the Sara Linton series and it doesn't disappoint.

Faith Mitchell gets home late to find blood through her mother's house, her baby daughter hidden and her mother vanished. Two men remaining in the house are looking for something, but by one thing or another she's shot them both before they explain. And she still doesn't know where they took her mother. By the end of the investigation she's learning about her mother's career as a cop, and also her life as a women defined by the sixties. You could read this as a standalone crime novel with excellent, multi-faceted characters and a terrific convoluted plot, but if you read the other books first you've got something even better: another segment of these characters' lives that the author propels forward without apology. This is a landmark book for Will Trent particularly. If you're a fan of his, you can't miss it.

Reason for Reading: Next in the series.A refreshingly, page-turning, exiting thriller that this long time Slaughter fan has finally found worthy of five stars again. Slaughter's last several books have been in the 3 or 4 star range for me, good but just not up to Blindsighted and Kisscut, those first two explosive books. With Fallen, Slaughter is back in the seat with an exhilarating new thriller. Faith, Will's partner, is a major character in this book as her mother is kidnapped and she sets off to track down the merciless person or persons who have done so, along the way she even becomes a suspect. She realizes she can't go it alone and comes to Will for help and even former coroner, Sara Linton. The case is fantastic and an exciting read. Possibly the plot is a little over the top, but who cares! Slaughter is in top form here.I've said it before in my reviews that I've never liked Sara Linton, but Slaughter takes her character through some major development in this book, as she does Will Trent. Giving them both a much needed update in their current situations and taking them forward in a direction that I amazingly am very satisfied with. An all around top-notch thriller with great character development for the series as a whole.

This book is the third of Karin Slaughter’s to combine her Grant County and Atlanta series characters. These combined books are my only exposure so far to Sara Linton, so I am not as familiar with her history as I am with Will, Faith, and Amanda. This book focuses mainly on Faith, whose mother has been tortured and kidnapped for reasons she is not sure of. Both a witness and a victim, Faith is unable to officially participate in the investigation and it’s driving her crazy… almost literally, as she can’t seem to get her diabetes under control. In the meantime, Will (with the help of Sara) and Amanda are trying to get to the bottom of things. They know that it all has to do with the corruption case that ended Faith’s mother’s career, but the whos and whys are elusive.I am a big fan of Will Trent, and I’ve enjoyed his growth through the books he’s been in. It’s nice to see him grow more assertive and independent and sure of himself as he realizes a woman can like him without also hating him. I’m looking forward to future books with Will and Sara; will his misery be like Samson’s hair? Is Sara his Delilah?

This is the first Karin Slaughter novel I have read, but it won't be the last if this is any indication of the pace she sets for her characters... off and running right from the first page. A true suspense thriller! The story and characters held my interest all the way through to the surprising end. I felt the relationships were believable and I did care about what happened. I can't wait to read more about Will Trent, well really about all of them really. I NEED to see how they got to this point. The only parts that did not ring true to me were the actions surrounding Faith medical condition, how she and others handled her diabetes. I too am a diabetic and said 'Huh?' and 'No!' to most of those parts.Overall... Karin Slaughter has a new devotee!

Karin Slaughter, another author I had not read until receiving an early reviewer copy of Fallen. Faith Mitchell; single mother, cop, and devoted daughter; arrives at her mother’s house to find her baby in danger, dead bodies, and threatening criminals and her mother kidnapped. If that story line does not catch your interest, then nothing will. I read this book while travelling and I could not get it out of my head during my eight-hour days driving. Slaughter’s writing style is engaging and keeps the story moving with new details and unanswered questions that continue at a good pace. I found myself trying to puzzle out just what her mother had been up to as a police officer that would lead to her being kidnapped. Had she really stolen a million dollars that she had hidden away and if she did not, why did she have a secret bank account? Does Faith’s boss know the truth about her mother and why won’t she share what she does know. Faith’s partner is equally complex as is his own love life. Fallen features a well-crafted storyline with complex characters and satisfying twists and turns in the plot. I will be reading more works by Karin Slaughter.

Wow, where do I even begin with this series? Like I've said before, Karin Slaughter is probably my #1 favorite author and any true fan of the Grant County series can tell you these characters are seriously amazing. They feel like old friends now, so every time I read a new installment in the series it's like reuniting with them all over again. In this book, Faith's mother, Evelyn, is kidnapped and everyone is at a loss as to why. The crime scene is bloody and everyone knows if Evelyn isn't already dead she will be soon. Faith is shocked and terrified for her mother and she has to rely on her partner Will and Dr. Sara Linton to help her find Evelyn before it's too late. The characters in this series are absolutely amazing. I guess before I go too much further, this review might have some spoilers. There is a MAJOR event that takes place in Beyond Reach that changes everything, so if you haven't read that one yet and plan to in the future, I suggest you don't read this whole review. I guess you take that risk with any sequel to a book though. We see Faith sort of fall apart in this one and not without good reason. She's worried about her mother, but she's also worried about something happening to her kids. She's still a very strong, smart woman though and does anything and everything she can to figure out where her mother is. I'll admit, when both Faith and Will arrived on the scene several books ago, I wasn't too pleased. Not that they weren't well written, just that when I'm used to certain characters, change can be difficult. Now I really love them though. Will is very instrumental in trying to solve this case, since Faith is mostly at home protecting her kids. I love how successful he is despite his battle with dyslexia; he's developed ways of organizing his notes and things so that he's very efficient. He still seems to be embarrassed by his handicap, but not as much so as in previous books (probably because pretty much everyone knows about it now). Amanda Wagner (Will and Faith's supervisor, Faith's sort-of Aunt, and one of Evelyn's closest friends) takes charge of most of the investigation, with Will at her side. I wanted to slap her quite a few times in this book, and I know Will did too, for not being forthcoming with information pertinent to the case. She was trying to protect Evelyn and her secrets, but it seemed like every time Will would find out an important piece of information, Amanda already knew about it and so it wasted a lot of time. Even though she's extremely tough, and even that may be an understatement, we see a much softer side of Amanda in this book. Sara gets dragged into the investigation as well, examining the dead bodies that pop up and giving her two cents on the situation. I love Sara and I hate seeing her working in the hospital environment where I'm pretty sure she's unhappy; she needs to go back to having her own practice. Basically I just want to see her happy again. It's been almost 5 years since the "event that shall not be named" and she's still trying to find some normalcy in her life. I loved the twists and turns that are present in all of Karin Slaughter's books. Towards the end I had things figured out, but the ending was still explosive and amazing. Unlike some books, I think this one ended on a very good note so maybe I can rest easy until the next one comes out.Now on to the romance. There's a lot of chemistry and sexual tension between Will and Sara and I just couldn't wait for them to kiss. Sara's been understandably broken and Will has been with Angie for a very long time and doesn't know what a healthy relationship should be. Of course who should decide to make her appearance in this book at the worst possible time? Angie! I know both Will and Angie had extremely tough times in foster care, with abuse being part of their normal routine. I just can't seem to find any compassion for Angie anymore. She's mean, manipulative, and just plain evil; she likes to tell Will he can't survive without her, and he's been so emotionally damaged that for the most part he believes her. Let's just say I wouldn't be sad if she disappeared from the face of the earth. You'll know what I mean and probably agree with me when you read this one.I absolutely loved this book, Karin Slaughter is at the top of her game like always. Her books are so suspenseful my heart races the entire time I'm reading and the characters are so real that I hate to remind myself when the book is finished that they are fictional. I didn't want to say too much in my review because I didn't want to give too much away. If you haven't read any of her books yet, please do; you won't be disappointed! If you're already a huge fan of her books, make sure you get this book as soon as it's released (6/21/11) because it's amazing. But her fans wouldn't expect anything less!

I enjoyed reading Fallen from the moment it arrived in my mailbox. Slaughter knows how to write suspense which kept me on my toes waiting for the next shoe to drop. I found the book interesting and loved getting to know another side of Faith Mitchell and the criminal life of Faith's mother. I would like to see Slaughter further develop Will Trent's character, and feel that the author is leading us into the further revolution of Trent. Overall, like all of her books, Karin Slaughter delivers again.

Don’t you hate when you’re following a series and the author and the characters sort of wind down after a while? Not here: Slaughter cranks them up, and delivers a darned good story. This book is intelligent, very well-crafted, with great characterizations (including much more of the appealing Will Trent than in previous books) and has a good, sustained level of tension. I think this is her best one yet! Most of the focus of this book is on Georgia Bureau of Investigation Agent Will, his partner Faith, and their boss Amanda. The interactions between Faith and her mother, and Faith and her children are so well-done and natural-seeming, you have to pinch yourself to ensure you’re not in a room watching actual people. And the problems evinced by Will with relationships, which stemmed from the awful experiences of his childhood, in my opinion are drawn to perfection. Dr. Sara Linton has finally recovered from the murder of her husband four and one-half years previously. She is no longer sniveling and moping around, but is once again the incisive, caring, sexy woman we loved so much in the earlier books.I realize I’m not telling you anything about the plot. But the spoilers start right away. Suffice it to say it is a police procedural that pays strong attention to the crime but even more so to the character portrayals. If you like Karin Slaughter, you’ll love this latest in her Will Trent/Sara Linton series. And the best news of all? It can be read as a stand alone!Discussion: Why I like Karin Slaughter’s books so much is a mystery to me, so to speak. Generally, the plots involve things I can’t stand: either very bad violence toward women, or drug gangs and drug wars. Her protagonists are for the most part very good looking, something that usually turns me off [too unrealistic]. But then there are all the appealing aspects: while her author newsletter, to which I subscribe, is funny and charming and full of pet news, in her books, Slaughter is tough as nails. She doesn’t waste any prose by taking breaks from the action, but rather just switches the storylines at intervals. Her women are a terrific combination of rock solid and soft, written in a way that doesn’t exaggerate either element. Her heroes may be good looking, but they are flawed in charming ways that are creatively different than most detective books. And some of her terrific sense of humor does manage to leak into her books, in spite of their serious nature. It makes the dialogue and action seem more realistic.Evaluation: I love Karin Slaughter as an author, and I liked this book even more than her others!Notes for the record:Location: Atlanta, GeorgiaCharacters: Faith Mitchell, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Age 34, diabetic, unmarried mother of 20 year old Jeremy and four-month-old Emma (by different fathers)Dr. Sara Linton, Pediatric Attending Doctor in Emergency at Atlanta’s Grady Hospital, 39, widowed, 5’,11”, auburn red hair, has two greyhounds and a catWill Trent, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Age 34, 6’3”, grown up in a children’s home and never been adopted, dyslexic, married to Angie, has a Chihuahua named BettyAmanda Wagner, Deputy Director, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, probably in the vicinity of 60Evelyn Mitchell, Faith’s mother, retired Captain of the narcotics squad at the Atlanta Police DepartmentKarin Slaughter's books in orderThe Grant County seriesBlindsighted (2001)Kisscut (2002)A Faint Cold Fear (2003)Indelible (2004)Faithless (2005)Beyond Reach (2007)The Will Trent/Atlanta seriesTriptych (2006)Fractured (2008)The Georgia series (combining characters from both series)Undone (2009)Broken (2010)Fallen (2011)

Karin Slaughter has written another edge-of-your-seat suspence novel. When Agent Faith Mitchell arrives at her mother's home to find evidence of a crime, she is not only an anxious daughter, but becomes a material part of a larger crime. Faith reacts quickly and kills two of the intruders, but her mother is nowhere to be found. Her involvement in the shooting precludes her being an active part of the investigation, so she relies on her partner and friends to work the crime. Secrets from her mother's past come to light as the book progresses. An action filled adventure with credible and likeable characters will make this a book you'll want to finish in a single sitting.

I was a big fan of Karin Slaughter's early work. While she remains a great writer, for me, her last few novels have fallen a bit short. Fallen has tremendous potential with gripping suspense and characters that stand out. But the cast of characters in this one is quite large and sometimes hard to keep track of. Slaughter's attempt to keep the suspense rendered an often frustratingly vague plot that didn't tie together until the very end. I found the conclusion too convenient in some aspects and a little unbelievable in others. This book is part of an ongoing series. Slaughter fills in plenty of details about her characters' pasts, so I don't think it would be a problem for a reader new to her work to follow along
