About this ebook

When Marshall King and Elyse Alton suddenly wake up tangled in each other's arms with zero memory of how they got there or even who they are, it's the start of a long journey through their separate pasts and shared future.

Terrified by their amnesia, Marshall and Elyse make a pact to work together to find the answers that could restore their missing memories. As they piece together clues about their lives, they discover that they're in the idyllic mountain resort town of Summer Falls. Everyone seems happy there, but as Marshall and Elyse quickly learn, darkness lurks beneath the town's perfect facade. Not only is the town haunted by sinister ghosts, but none of its living inhabitants retain bad memories of anything—not the death of Marshall's mom, not the hidden violence in Elyse's family, not even the day-to-day anguish of being a high schooler.

Lonely in this world of happy zombies, Marshall and Elyse fall into an intense relationship founded on their mutual quest for truth. But the secrets they're trying to uncover could be the death of this budding love affair—and of everyone, and everything, they love in Summer Falls.

I saw this book on Goodreads giveaways (and didn't win, sadly), and kept it on my to read list because the plot looked so fascinating.Glimmer by Phoebe Kitanidis starts dramatically with two teenagers waking up together naked in bed. The twist is, they have no memory of each other or of their own lives. From there, in alternating first person narratives, we learn little by little about each of the characters, the odd town that they are inhabiting, and their lives prior to their loss of memory.I am very torn when writing this review, because I thought that this book would definitely get five stars from me. The first 75% of the book is perfectly paced with very even viewpoints from each of the characters-- and this decision is necessary for this book. We have to learn about each of the characters history and take each of their individual journeys to understand what is going on. I was fascinated, drawn in, and I couldn't put it down. It has been a while since I didn't start editing a book in my head with changes that I thought might help. Something happens in the last few chapters, and the thing is, I can't quite pinpoint the problem that I had with it. It may just be a personal preference, but some of the twists start to become a little more heavy-handed and the pacing seems off especially in comparison to the terrific beginning. That said, this book is definitely worth reading, has wonderful characters and a really wonderful premise. I'm excited to see what else Kitanidis has up her sleeve!

This book is definitely going on my top 12 list for 2012!If you're looking for a very unique and different kind of story to read, this is it!!!The writing, the characters, the story-line, the pacing - everything is spot on... even if I wanted to, tried to, forget this book, I would never be able to! Yes, it is that good! Can you imagine waking up, not knowing where you are or who your with? But also, having absolutely no idea who you are??? Mind blowing! And ladies and gentlemen, that is how this story begins! We meet Her and Him, who we eventually learn are Elyse and Marshall. As scared as they are, they are able to go with their instincts to trust one another and help each other figure out what has happened to them, why they cannot remember anything and why their town, Summer Falls, and its residents are so odd and completely out of it - it's creepy. Page-turner creepy.Their discoveries are so unpredictable and and at times sad, you cannot help but feel what these two are going through as they discover who they are/where, how they feel about it each other before and now, and you start to really fall into this odd world of theirs and really hope that things will get better for them soon.*A bit spoiler-ish here...There are ghosts walking about! They're not spooky scary, but if you can see one, you better run away!I really did like the whole paranormal twist to this story and how it developed. However, my one and only wish is that I would have liked to have known more about the the 'legendary tribe' and Summer Falls guardians at the end of the story. We do get to find out as to why and the how, but will it happen again? I'm hoping that their will be some sort of short story or novella to give a little bit more detail. *End spoiler.I highly recommend this book!Magic, ghosts, mystery, trust and love all mixed into one of the best paranormal books I have read in a long while!

Imagine if you will, waking up with no memories… I’m talking NONE. Zero, zilch, nada. You cant even remember your own NAME! Much less the guy’s name who happens to be laying next to you… NAKED.What would your first thought be? I know what MINE would be… HOLY %&*#!!! To say the very least.“This is the place where I’m going to die too. I know this, but I am not afraid.”Marshall and Elyse have NO IDEA how they ended up NAKED and in bed together… They don’t remember ANYTHING at all. Not even their own names! HIM AND HER… this is how the first few chapters of Glimmer are titled. Alternating POV’s between Marshall (HIM or Dark-eyed boy) and Elyse (HER).After an ‘escape’ from the house they woke up in, a strange encounter with a “crazy” lady, an invisible woman and a weird blue light… they finally make it into town. The hospital personnel (I’d have slapped her!) calls the POLICE and reports them for truancy! Oh NEVERMIND the fact that they CAN’T remember anything lady!!!!Upon escorting Elyse home, I’m certain the police officer is freaking CRAZY! As is her MOTHER… they all want to act like the fact that Elyse NOT remember anything is “fine” and insist that shes having an “episode”. What type of episode? Uuuum hello? Which is pretty much what Elyse says to her and the reason I stayed up until 3:30 am to finish this book after starting it at 10pm.“I look like a pissed off Disney Princess. Adorable… and harmless.”What’s more is everyone seems to have these “memory lapses” and it’s all just a part of the town’s charm!!! They even use it as an added selling point for bringing the tourists in! These bouts of amnesia are referred to as “heat naps” and you’ll never believe how Glimmer pans out!Glimmer was nothing like I EXPECTED… which is pretty freaking perfect considering I LOVED IT! Full of twists and turns, this Brunette recommends you order Pheobe Kitandis’ debut ASAP! From beginning to end, Glimmer was completely mesmerizing! I stayed up all night to watch this mystery unfold!

'She' wakes up in a bed she doesn't know if it is her own. She doesn't remember what happened, what day it is, or how she got there. WAIT! She's naked and there is a boy next to her - asleep - relaxed - and.... HE'S IN HIS BIRTHDAY SUIT! Whoa!'He' wakes up groggy, empty, and he smells peaches and sunscreen. There's a brown haired girl next to him. Wow she's pretty! Who is she? Huh, Where are my clothes!!?Neither one knows how they got there, who each other are, forgotten every memory, and what their name is.Glimmer by Phoebe Kitanidis is SO Fraking AWESOME!! It threw me into a loop! A loop of unending excitement and anxiety! It began all 'steamy' and interesting right from the very first page! Glimmer will chew you up and won't spit you out till you're geeking out and flipping the last page!Phoebe Kitanidis has done a marvelous job in grabbing my undivided attention. Just from the cover and its title I didn't now what to expect. Even the synopsis doesn't do the book justice. I honestly didn't know what was going to happen, who did what, who to believe, and Oh My Goodness I could not stop turning the pages at 3 o'clock in the AM. I LOVED IT!The story was very well built, it's not hard to remember each unique character, and the descriptions of Summer Falls were not that difficult to imagine. The characters are easily pieced together that in the end I liked everyone even the 'bad guy'!She who will not be named (just to not add any spoilers) lol is a great character. I felt her pain when she started to remember her past and her memories. Very head strong and not annoying in the least. Boy who will not be named =) is a bit of a lunk-head hahaha but still admirable in his convictions. The story was fun and amusing. The ending was lovely and had a great closer if this is to be a stand alone. Loved the idea, Loved the plot, LOVED Glimmer! MUST GO READ!!

Glimmer is a deceptively cheerful novel, full of mystery, intrigue, and misplaced emotion in interesting situations. Phoebe Kitanidis pens an extraordinary tale of strangeness in an unsettling utopian fantasy, where heatnaps, vagueness of memory loss, magic, and haunted spirits can be found lurking around every corner. It possesses a unique Pleasantville quality, that does a wonderful job of displaying the strangeness of the town as well as the towns people's odd behavior. It isn't like any other ghost story told in young adult fiction, yet it is a mystery all its own that is very unpredictable in many twists and turns. The unraveling of the mystery behind Summer Falls and why the towns people react as they do, is sure to keep readers entertained and engaged. From the moment Marshall and Elyse wake up in bed together, confused without their memories and no idea how they ended up there, the mystery begins to unfold as they make a pact to work together to find the answers to their missing memories. They soon discover they'll have to rely on other's to help them figure out who they are, and why they can't remember anything. The closer they work together, the more they start to realize that their idyllic little resort town they call home, is a place where everyone seems mysteriously happy all of the time. Summer Falls has a darkness hidden just below the surface of the town's eerily perfect facade of happiness. The town seems to be haunted by malevolent spirits of the past, but the odd thing is that none of the town’s people seem to have any negative or bad memories to speak of. They don't seem to remember anything at all about the death of Marshall's mom, the deep hidden shame that shadows Elyse's family, or even the day to day normal anguish of high school drama that typically occurs. As Marshall and Elyse find themselves alone in a world of happy zombies, they slowly start gravitating to one another and soon develop an intense relationship. However, the dark and mysterious secrets they begin to uncover could potentially be the end of their budding romance. It could also mean the death of everyone, and everything, they love. Of course, there will be a few clashes of their personalities along the way, but eventually they will start to work together as equal members of a team. It's endearing to watch these two overcome the obstacles and unravel the mysteries behind the weirdness of their strange town, while having to deal with their own personal issues separately.Phoebe Kitanidis does a fantastic job of blending the perfect balance between contemporary with a twinge of paranormal mystery, to keep readers satisfied. Her characters are vibrant and fascinating, with many flavorful quirks given to them, including a host of supporting characters exhibiting strange behaviors and brilliantly weird mannerisms that make it even more interesting. Elyse is a wonderfully honest person with amazing integrity and a good natured spirit about her. She has good intentions for wanting to protect those she cares about as well as herself and a driven desire to be stronger. She's found a way to sort of beat the system, by keeping a journal of all of her bad memories with a note attached that says, "Please remember this, Elyse." She keeps it hidden in her locker at school, so no one will find it.Marshall was also a delightful character to get to know, with a hero-complex that wants to save the world or at the very least, the town’s people of Summer Falls. Throughout the novel he becomes very protective of Elyse as he starts to fall for her and tries to be the one to do everything he can. He wants to finish what his mother died trying to do, so he puts together a magical memory seal and a plan, then he and Elyse make a video on their phone to remember what they have done. The first time they do this, he makes a mistake and when it comes to light, it sort of causes a rift between him and Elyse. The second time, they're in it together until the end, no matter the consequences or what may occur. There's a welcomed camaraderie and bravery in the face of what these two might stand to lose if it doesn't go their way.Phoebe Kitanidis has crafted a wonderfully well written and thought out story, full of suspenseful plot and interesting characters that are engaging and delightful to get to know. It has a sickening sinister sweet appeal to it that will have readers trying to unravel the mystery as it progresses. There is a wonder in the unpredictability witnessed in the plot twists and turns, that makes it an even more delicious read. She writes her characters in an incredibly realistic way that makes them extremely relatable and easy to sympathize with. It's a fantastically riveting stand alone novel that breathes new life into young adult fiction.Glimmer is chalk full of daring surprises lurking around every corner, evil forces hidden just beneath the seams, and an intriguing magical tale of forgiveness and second chances, that will leave readers screaming for more. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys deep twisted mysteries with just a hint of paranormal and daring plot twists sure to keep them on the edge of their seats.

What I LikedThe WorldPerfection does come at a cost for the little happy town, but the townies don't really know what that cost is. This concept is so crazy and awesome, but I am so glad I don't live in it. Give me the pain of my memories any day over these lies. Also the ghost and magic just add to the appeal of the world that Phoebe has created for her characters.CharactersElyse: She is a very "human" character, she has her flaws and she knows what they are, but she just wants to escape her life. I give her a lot of credit for fighting in her own way and taking initiative to do something about it all. Elyse was a bit of a surprise for me, I was expecting weakness as she finds out about her life, but what was revealed was strength. Marshall: I'm glad we get to learn about new Marshall, not the original old Marshall, I don't think I would have liked him that much. Who he is becoming and who he was are two different type of people, it goes to show that people can change given the circumstances and opportunity.A Little ConfusionFollowing two characters with amnesia was a little confusing at first. Not only are the characters trying to puzzle out who they are, but as the reader you are also trying to figure what type of rules their world has as well. I personally like to understand the parameters of a created fantasy world early on in the book. As this world got unraveled I quickly forgot about it and become very intrigued with everything.RecommendationDefinitely worth the read

Happy zombies is an accurate description of the townspeople. Nobody remembers unpleasant incidents, and the townspeople have memory gaps as a result. Elyse wakes up next to a stranger with no memories of who she is; Marshall has no memories either. The style of writing takes the reader straight into the minds of the two characters (the story alternates between Elyse and Marshall's perspectives). I was right there with the character as they explored the town and tried to figure out their identities and why the townspeople are so bizarre.Elyse is an honest, good-natured person who wants to be stronger to protect herself and those she cares about. Marshall is the hero-type who tries to do everything by himself and wants to save the world. Initially, the two personalities will clash, as Marshall takes charge of the situation and Elyse protests, wanting the two to work as equal members of a team. Their relationship takes interesting turns with the two of them learning more about themselves before their memory loss and who they want to be in the present. The setting is well crafted. Summer Falls is a dreamy place. The unnatural warmth of the town and its promise of a trouble-free vacation makes it a tourist attraction. However, shadows and black magic lurk underneath its happy ambiance, and Elyse's ability to see the ghosts haunting the town adds a touch of horror to the mystery behind the town. Each time I put down Glimmer, I found myself looking around me to see if a ghost won't reach for me. I was that drawn into the novel.Glimmer is an original, horrific paranormal work that explores characters placed in a stagnant town with both the living and dead bound together under a malevolent power. The plot takes time to develop as Elyse and Marshall are as clueless as the reader in the beginning, but once they figure out the situation, the story takes off. If you are looking for a refreshing paranormal read with sinister elements woven into it, this is the book for you.

When I first started Glimmer, I loved the concept and the character introductions. Unfortunately, as the story progressed it fell flat for me in multiple ways. Although the writing was great, the storyline and characters didn't live up to my expectations.Elyse and Marshall don't know who they are and how they even ended up with each other. Working backwards from that day, they find clues as to who they are. Once they have a slight grasp on their identity, Elyse and Marshall find an unusual pattern in the everyday lives of the people of Summer Falls. Soon they know that the town's secrets need to be released and that they have the power to change everything.I really wish I would have connected to Elyse, even the slightest bit. I just really disliked her. She came off as whiny and sullen and I just had no personal connection to her. On the other hand, Marshall is what kept me interested in the progressing storyline. He was an interesting guy, who had previously (before his current memories) been kind of the bad/mean boy. I think Marshall and Elyse were such a mismatched pair that the alternating narratives felt like too much. The paranormal and mystery twist Kitanidis throws us was cool, but the ghost/magic mix was weird and didn't flow together for me. I liked the overall concept proposed in the book, but I expected more from it. I also enjoyed the writing, which was crisp and clear. I found myself eating up the words, but was hoping along the way that I would have a spark of connection with the book or its characters. Sadly, that didn't happen and I was left dissatisfied when finished.Overall, Glimmer fell a little flat. Even though the writing was great, the characters and storyline didn't hit the nail on the head for me. If you are interested in ghosts and/or magic, I would recommend you try it out. You never know...you may enjoy it!For those who like: Magic, ghosts, unique stories, alternating narrativesSource: Publisher (ARC)

Glimmer is definitely different from most of the YA Paranormal books out there. It's a Utopian Fantasy with likable characters and an engrossing plot. The story starts out with both Elyse and Marshall not knowing their own names, where they came from, or even what they look like. It's intense, to say the least. Readers are unable to uncover the mysteries of Summer Falls right alongside Marsh and Elyse, which is cool. The story is told from both POVs, and it worked okay. I felt like there could have been a bit more difference between the two voices, but overall, the two different POVs worked out just fine. If you like Utopian Fantasies, then you do not want to miss this book. I was hooked from the first page, determined to figure out all of the secrets surrounding Summer Falls. Summer Falls, CO, seems to be the perfect town. The weather is perfect (60-70 degrees F year-round), the residents are beyond happy, and nothing bad ever seems to happen there. It has a natural beauty, which attracts the outdoorsy types, and the town's laid back demeanor and the "heat naps" attract tourists who are looking for an escape. What could be the problem with such a wonderful place, you ask? Well it turns out that a place that terrific has a lot of problems. At first glance, it may seem like not remembering bad things that happened would be a good thing, but not only does the ripping of bad memories cause brain damage, it also allows the same terrible things to keep happening over and over again. The only problem is no one knows that those things happened more than once. When someone tries to get away from a bad situation, they suddenly take a nap and forget anything bad ever happened, and then the vicious cycle starts again. Marsh and Elyse are both likable characters. One pet peeve of mine, throughout this book, though, was that they rarely referred to their parents as "Mom" or "Dad." They always called their parents by their first names. I would have written that off to Summer Falls weirdness, but Marshall wasn't from there originally, so it seemed odd to me that he'd call his parents by their first names for his entire life as well. It just didn't seem natural to me.The pacing of the book is pretty spot on, though it does lag in a couple of parts. And some parts don't flow correctly. Sometimes a character is in one place, and they end up in another place and I had no idea how, when, or why they went to where they went. I feel that things like that could have been handled a bit better. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Glimmer is a thrill-ride that you won't want to miss! I'll definitely be looking for more books by Phoebe Kitanidis.

Why can't there be more out-of-the-box amazing stories like this one? I adored it. Just the beginning of a confusing mess turn into magic makes me giddy!I really enjoyed the unique plot line. As much as I love paranormal books, some times the plots line bore me. I want some thing new other than vampires, werewolves, etc. Now this book, gave me what I want. A fresh, unique bold plot line. First off, let me just say that I enjoyed this plot line because it was some thing new I never read before. I liked that intensity that that plot gives. With each new chapter, pieces of their identities are found, more memories of their past unlocked. I was completely hooked by the end of chapter one.The characters in this book really played two different roles. The lives that they lived and the lives that they wanted. I think the back story to both characters is very fulfilling for the reader. With each new memory restored, the reader gets to see what life these characters were living. To see what they suffered under a new light left me heart broken. The love interest played out well. Two broken people wanting something new. Everything they did under the radar to help each other out, really help love form between them. I adored their will to change what they can and free people. They had some peaceful moments within their times of trouble. It brought the right amount of balance to the book.Glimmer is an daring, dark story of magic gone wrong. In it's breathtaking artistic expression, stepping into Summer Fall's will make you forget everything you thought you know. Glimmer opens your eyes to the dangerous things unseen.

Holy Hell on wheels this was a C-R-A-Z-Y ride! (mostly in a good way) This bad boy starts of fast and INSANE and doesn't really slow down until well over half-way through. We begin the story with Marshall and Elyse waking up naked and tangled up with each other, which normally wouldn't be so weird, but neither one of them can remember how they got there. They also can't remember who they are or pretty much anything. Their world gets stranger and stranger as they emerge into the town of Summer Falls. Spoilers up ahead: So Elyse can see ghosts and Marshall is some kind of witch-boy. They want to get out of this town, yet they want to save it. They want all their memories back. Insanity! I can't even summarize this in a decent manner. This book.... kept me entertained, kept me guessing and kept me wanting to read more. I have to admit after about 175 pages or so, some of my interest started to drift. It slowed down and drug a little in the middle and toward to the end it felt a little rushed. 3.75 stars with a rec to read this one. Fun, creepy, interesting, exciting and not predictable. I have never read anything like this. Big thanks to A for letting me read this. Let's hope for no psychotic moments from ___________ ;) Ch-ch-ch- check this one out!

Looking for an out of the box read? I'll happily start this review by saying that this book will satisfy that need. Phoebe Kitanidis has done it yet again, writing a book that will keep you reading well into the wee hours of the morning. My attention was caught instantly by the fact that these two teens wake up in such an odd situation. I kept wondering how they could have completely forgotten everything. As I read on I realized that things were just a little too perfect in the town of Summer Falls. Ghosts, mystery...heatnaps? Oh yes. That's what you'll find inside Glimmer and so much more!

This story is told in alternating points of view, which actually works really well in the overall flow of things. Both Elyse and Marshall are vivid characters with just enough difference in their voices to make them easier to discern. Which is important, because a lot of times they will have the same thoughts. It's eerie, and slightly sweet. Still, what I loved was watching their struggle. As Elyse and Marshall discover who they once were, they realize how much they dislike those people. The reader gets to follow along as they figure out how to fight back and become better.

In case you're worried that Glimmer is all ghosts and no romance, let me assure you that there is a romance here. It just so happens to be a beautifully broken one. Here we have two people fighting to figure out where they came from, while working together to figure out where to go next. Elyse and Marshall have a lot of tough moments in the story (and some creepy ones as well), but Kitanidis balances it out with a bit of sweetness too. These two have their fair share of adorable moments together, and it makes everything even more worthwhile.

I'd love to say more, but I don't want to give anything away! The ghosts in this book are especially fantastic and different, but if I say more you won't have that part to uncover. So instead I'll just say that this is a read that is well worth your time! If you are looking for something outside the box. If you need a paranormal that strays away from the usual zombies, vampires and werewolves, pick up a copy of Glimmer. Just be prepared to read all night.

Recommended (if you have extra money)Elyse and Marshall wake up naked, in bed, with no memory of what happened. They don’t know each other and they don’t know their names. They decide to work together to try to figure out what happened to them. As they learn things about themselves, they get closer in trying to figure out what is wrong with their town. They place they live is called Summer Falls and it’s always perfect. Good weather, good looking inhabitants, everyone is happy and on the surface things are good. However, as scientists try to find out what makes Summer Falls so perfect, they begin to realize that “heatnaps” cause memories to be erased. All the bad memories are erased, but with each heat nap…part of the person is lost. This book is an ok addition to a public or school library. The chapters alternate between Elyse and Marshall. I appreciate what the author was trying to do with the different perspectives. This book deals with spirits, ghosts, magic, romance and action. It also deals with two teens who come from completely different cliques in high school. Elyse is the most popular person at school and Marshall is practically invisible. I would recommend this book to older students because of the sex and the physical abuse Elyse suffered by her step-father.The book cover was very attractive, but I was not expecting the paranormal/spiritual twist the book would take. The reader just has to use their imagination as to how this would all fall into place. I think the author just tried to weave together too many magical elements and there were still some unanswered questions at the end of the story. I am sure that some teens would really enjoy this book. Ultimately, the message is about finding yourself, which is a good message for teens. I’m not sure that I would do much more with this book than just add it to the library collection.

In short: Though the big reveal of the mystery wasn't as satisfying as I wanted, I was still kept entertained with Glimmer's intriguing premise and the piecemeal revelation of the big secret.Strangers Elyse and Marshall wake up naked in bed next to each other and can't remember a thing about themselves or their lives before. But it gets stranger: in their town of Summer Falls, Colorado, it never gets cold and everyone seems perfect in a freaky Stepford Wives kind of way. The inhabitants are also susceptible to these things called "heatnaps" in which any upsetting incidents cause people to faint and are forgotten upon waking up. There is a hint of something more sinister afoot in this seemingly perfect, sleepy town and together, Elyse and Marshall must unravel the town's dark secrets to get back their memories.I love these psychological mystery kind of stories. I love being confused, if that makes sense. It's kind of fun losing yourself in the mystery and not knowing what's going on, unravelling the mystery as the characters do. Stories like Glimmer are also guaranteed to maintain your interest throughout, if only because you feel like you NEED to find out the solution to the great enigma presented in the beginning. Glimmer is told through alternating POVs between Elyse and Marshall, but there is little overlap between the dual narratives ensuring the story moves along at a good pace. The mystery comes together piece by piece, which was great fun. Glimmer is a standalone so thankfully there were no major loose ends left hanging at the end.The characterization was interesting with respect to the plot because the characters essentially wake up as blank slates, not knowing who they are or what they were like before. Over the course of Glimmer, they slowly uncover some nasty things about their life before and some unpleasant things about themselves that indicate they weren't as good people as they thought they were. The result is an interesting look into the characters' psyche.I did have a few issues with Glimmer, however. Though there were no major loose ends left hanging at the end, there were still more outstanding questions leftover upon closing the final page than I would like. I also had a major problem with the plausibility of the concept. So I would say Glimmer's conclusion with the big reveal of the mystery wasn't as satisfying as I wanted, but I still had fun with the story. I was still kept plenty entertained at the intriguing premise and the piecemeal revelation of the big secret. I don't think Glimmer will be particularly memorable for me in the long run, but I had fun with it while it lasted.
