About this ebook

With every one of his ten novels a New York Times bestseller, emergency medicine physician Michael Palmer is recognized by critics and fans worldwide as a master of medical suspense. Now Palmer delivers a relentless thriller that slices to our deepest fears with surgical precision—a tale as timely as it is terrifying, as harrowing as it is plausible. Welcome to The Society.

At the headquarters of Boston’s Eastern Quality Health, the wealthy and powerful CEO is brutally murdered. She’s not the first to die—nor the last. A vicious serial killer is on the loose and the victims have one thing in common: they are all high-profile executives in the managed care industry. Dr. Will Grant is an overworked and highly dedicated surgeon. He has experienced firsthand the outrages of a system that cares more about the bottom line than about the life-and-death issues of patients. As a member of the Hippocrates Society, Will seeks to reclaim the profession of medicine from the hundreds of companies profiting wildly by controlling the decisions that affect the delivery of care. But the doctor’s determination has attracted a dangerous zealot who will stop at nothing to make Will his ally. Soon Will is both a suspect and a victim, a pawn in a deadly endgame. Then, in one horrible moment, Will’s professional and personal worlds are destroyed and his very life placed in peril.

Rookie detective Patty Moriarity is in danger of being removed from her first big case—the managed care killings. To save her career, she has no choice but to risk trusting Will, knowing he may well be the killer she is hunting. Together they have little to go on except the knowledge that the assassin is vengeful, cunning, ruthless—and may not be working alone. That—and a cryptic message that grows longer with each murder: a message Grant and Moriarity must decipher if they don’t want to be the next victims.

This book is a good medical thriller. Nothing super new or unique. But a pleasant way to pass the time. Will is a doctor who finds himself fighting HMO's. Soon, heads of HMO's are showing up murdered. Will finds himself a person of interest. He also develops feelings for detective Patty. Is he being framed, or is he involved with the murders?

Initially gave me the impression of being a commentary on managed care. Then got into the murder aspect but the overtones of managed care commentary remained. It was an ok read but had no punch for me.

Decent thriller that has too many logical flaws to be great. It also is way too biased towards Doctors and not towards Insurance. By and large throughout the book doctors are noble selfless heroes and insurance executives are heartless money loving jerks. Character development by cliche. But it was worth finishing.

This book was fantastic. It is a wonderful medical thriller. I don't know if they can work Carrie into any other stories but I really like her. It is always kind of scary to see what something that is to help people can be twisted to harm someone. I hope to read many more by Michael and Daniel Palmer.

Although Carrie was a little TOO unbelievably smart---that was fine--lots of twists and turns and who to trust, or not. I did NOT see the end coming but once I was there I realized I should have.

This is a medical thriller centering on Dr. Carrie Bryant and her involvement in a secret program through the VA that is attempting to cure PTSD. Carrie is all too familiar with the horrible effects of this condition as her older brother suffers from it due to his service in Afghanistan. At the beginning there are times the book plods along, but it picks up speed in the middle and end, making it quite readable. It is a collaborative effort of father and son, son writing it after dad’s untimely death. It is a wonderful tribute to his dad.

After being dismissed from her job at the hospital , she decides to go home. Her parents are there to support her during this transition in her life. She is glad to be home but still sees that her brother has not improved much. He has been suffering from PTSD. Adam seems fine by looking at him, but Carrie knows the turmoil going on inside his brain. She soon finds a new job that she believes will help her brother and others that suffer from PTSD. As she starts to do the procedure on a patient , she starts to see changes that should not be happening to the patient . Instead of improving, he seems to regressing. Cassie soon uncovers dark secrets about the program she has been working for. i If you are looking for a heart pounding nail biting ride, this is a must read. You can feel your heart race as the words from the pages grab you into the drama that the characters are living. The best medical thriller I have read. I feel as if I was right there with the characters as they faced danger,. I commend the authors for their intelligent thought provoking story that deals with a subject that many people suffer with everyday . A quote from the book Trauma says . " Rember those with invisible wounds." Thanks to the authors for reminding us that there are those that have wounds no one sees. (less) flagcomment · see reviewedit review
