      I am having trouble rating this one. On the one hand, I found Brown's story to be amazing and inspirational; but, I thought the writing itself was rudimentary and flat; it evoked little emotions in what should have been a book that gave you chills and made you cry. I felt the writing did improve during the war/military scenes, especially towards the end.

      Adam Brown's life ran from boy next door to tumultuous young adult to hero. I was truly in awe of how he was able to so fully turn his life around and become a man everyone could be proud of. His love for his family, his friends, and his country was evident in everything he did. He gave of himself selflessly and bravely.

      In a biography that ends in tragedy, it is great to see all the lives he had touched, all the people he had changed, and the countless many he had saved.

      Not a stellar book but I enjoyed it OK... personally, I think most SEAL books, if at least well-written, are good, so keep that in mind for this review. Audiobook narrator was excellent. If you don't like christian proselytizing then you may not want to read this. There was more christian rah-rah than seems warranted - his brother SEALs said that Adam was not "in your face" obnoxious about his faith but sometimes this book spirals in to that. If you can get thru that - and there is a LOT - then it was an interesting biography and, if Adam wanted his story to sound like a sermon then I can't really fault the author, but it does detract from the story Listen to the author interview at the end because there are a couple of other interesting "young Adam" stories.

      I am not even sure where I should start with this book. I know that there are no words to describe how much I loved this book. Right when I started this book I was hooked. The author did a great job of giving the background information that you needed while reading the story but he didn't over do it with to much information. I loved how you got to follow along as Adam Brown grew up and you get to be there through all of his ups and downs. I loved how I got to know him from a young age and also knew when he went through. It made it even better when he finally got where he wanted to be. It also made the ending even harder on me. When I got close to the end I didn't want to finish the book because I knew what was coming and I didn't want it to come to end.

      Tribute to Navy SEAL Adam Brown. Amazing story of an inspiring man, his family and close friends who (with their help and many prayers along the way) saw him rise up and overcome incredible obstacles to reach the pinnacle of military service, becoming a member of the honorable DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6).This book spans his life, from a daredevil 2 year old jumping 12 feet off his parents' deck, and then laughingly doing it again even after receiving a spanking, to jumping from a speeding vehicle off a bridge (a la the movie "Navy SEALs") when he was in high school, to overcoming an addiction to crack, no less, which turned his life upside down, ending with 11 felonies and time in jail. All of this before enlisting in the Navy.With the devotion of his wife, Kelley, his parents, and his own relentless drive to succeed, he made it through challenges which would be insurmountable for most men, eventually mastering the skills needed to be included in Team 6--which is difficult enough for even the best SEALs, but he did it after losing the vision in his dominant eye and the feeling in his dominant hand. For a shooter, that should have been the end of his career, but he retrained his brain to work with what he had. His fellow SEALs say that achievement is remarkable and unprecedented. Besides being known as an operator you could depend on, he was also known for his compassion for others. Stories from his childhood defending other kids against bullies to providing hundreds of pairs of shoes to Afghani children when he noticed they were either barefoot or wearing sandals when the snows were coming, it is said he always thought of others first. Along with the tales of his great sense of humor, his code of honor which would not allow him to break a promise, and his daredevil antics, we get a chance to feel like we actually knew Adam Brown, and the sadness of his loss (on March 17, 2010) hits as hard as if he were truly our friend.Another sad side note: We also get to know the SEALs interviewed by the author, friends and teammates of Adam Brown, who insisted they wanted Adam's story told. They were part of the group who took down Osama bin Laden and then (seven of the 10 SEALs we meet) later were killed themselves when their helo was shot down on August 6, 2011, killing 30 U.S. forces and 7 Afghan soldiers. Heartbreaking loss of irreplaceable human beings, protectors of not just their fellow Americans, but of humanity.

      When I read about this book from the author that email that was sent to me. I was like yes I want read about this. I really did enjoy it.It about the life of a Navy Seal named Adam Brown. It take you though this live from when He was born to when he died. The story starts out with an interview kind of setting. Though it goes though from How his parents meet and then and it goes though focus on Adam life. I really is a good read. It got to my emotions a bit twice though out the book.There are somethings that Adam does that are strange but also some really bad things. You will be surprise to see what he end up being and how he got there. It quite amazing at what he was able to to do and fight though to get there. If you want a good read and Non Fiction book this is a good one to pick up and read. It read though this family and teammates and friends.

      I struggled like crazy to get through this book. I love Adam and Kelley and the people within this story, but the writing is horrible and trying to read through it was not unlike choking through the worst dry sandwich ever. I'm still hoping that the reason for its juvenile pacing and shallow glimpses into these extraordinary peoples' lives is because Blehm wants to get to the meat of the matter as quickly as possible. No matter, it's strange and unpalatable. What I do want to commend, however, are the obviously beautiful souls shining brightly through this mess. Beyond the shaky structure of this poorly-told story are the genuinely admirable individuals whose hard work, failures, and triumphs culminate in the ultimate loss and sacrifice of one man: Adam Brown. His wife, Kelley Brown, their children, and Adam's parents, siblings, and entire family all had a hand in playing intricate roles in creating, defining, supporting, and loving him every step of the way.This book is very heavy on the religion, and it's something I wasn't necessarily expecting. I wish I'd known, too, so here's a warning to anyone out there who may be considering buying the book - lots of expectation that a Christian is reading this book and I felt a little bit as if I were being forced to worship. It's difficult to explain here, but what I think I'm trying to say is that the writer, mid-sentence, stops telling the story in chronological order and suddenly transitions into an external entity who's giving his praise to Adam or the family at that given moment. It was very jarring and uncomfortable, and I was VERY put-off by it.Overall, however, I find it very easy to separate Blehm from Adam Brown, Kelley Brown, and the family. I am a little disappointed for them that this was the person they chose/person they had to go with as the deliverer of the message. Beyond that, though, their amazing son/husband/brother/father is a hero whose light shines through and shines on. On this day, Memorial Day, and every day: Thank you for what you did for us, thank you for our freedom, and thank you for your sacrifice, Adam Brown.

      Love, strength, caring, fearlessness, faith, dedication, selflessness, these are all qualities that Adam Brown possessed. As a Navy Seal he epitomized the American warrior. Of the many stories that could be told of the Seals, his comrades invariably pointed to his story as the one they would like told. He was no saint. He would would be the first to admit he had his faults and his demons. Shortly out of high school, he became hooked on drugs, after he failed to find a direction for his life. He fell to the depths of lying to and stealing from his own family to support his habit. The turning point came when his parents realizing they could not help him, turned him in to the police. His mother was overcome as she and her husband watched him being handcuffed and taken to jail. Adam was crushed, but found remorse and the Lord while in jail. He resolved to beat the drugs and to once again become the type of person of whom his parents would be proud. It wasn't an easy road. He was helped by his new girl friend and future wife, Kelley. He determined to enlist in the Navy and become a Seal, the best the Navy had to offer. How could a man who admitted he was addicted to drugs turn his life around and become a Navy Seal? This book is the story of a man's struggle to overcome all odds. He started by devoting his life to faith in God, by not taking no for an answer, by not allowing others to tell him he could not get where he wanted to go. Adam Brown overcame obstacles that would stop most men dead in their tracks. At one point in training he lost the sight of his right eye in a training accident. Instead of giving up he trained himself to use the other eye to aim with, maintaining his marksmanship qualification. Later on a mission, the fingers of his right hand were crushed and nearly severed. He endured the pain of having his fingers reattached and when he found they would not work efficiently, he trained himself to shoot accurately with his left hand. He accomplished all of this with the support of his family, his teammates, and his faith in God. He seemed to be able to overcome any odds, until that night raid in Afghanistan on March 17, 2010. This is a very good book which recounts the life of a man who stood for all the best this country has to offer. He was selfless and brave. A man of faith and family. He was a man to look up to. His story, one that in these times truly needed to be told. The way he led his life was inspirational. A man any of us would be proud to know. This book was provided by the publishers for review.
