About this ebook

Challenge your body.   Feed your spirit.   Change the world.

Ask any Christian woman about her most recent New Year’s resolutions, and you’ll likely find that “exercise regularly” and “pray more” were at the top of her list. We all long to look and feel our best, to live actively and healthfully. More than that, we desire to connect intimately with our God. Yet physical health and spiritual growth often take a backseat to the urgent demands of grocery shopping and bill paying, time with family and friends, and long hours at the office.

It’s Time to Exercise Your Prayer Life.

Three years ago, author Janet Holm McHenry suffered from depression, weight gain, and exhaustion. Then she began a prayerwalk routine that not only transformed her life but also profoundly impacted the lives of those around her.

Learn how you, too, can set out on a journey to increased energy, better health, and greater joy—and experience a rich, full prayer ministry that will have a lasting impact on your loved ones and community—in PrayerWalk.

“Prayerwalking makes so much sense, you’ll wonder why you haven’t been doing it all your life!” —Heather and David Kopp, coauthors of the Praying the Bible series

“Honest, humorous, and insightful, PrayerWalk will encourage your heart.”
—Linda Dillow, author of Intimate Issues

While this is definitely a book for those just exploring prayer walking, I did find some good tips and suggestions in it. Having an already deeply rooted spiritual life that includes prayer walking, as well as labyrinth walking, most of the "how to start" sections were too basic for me. At the same time, the book is well written and a charming memoir of the author's own start to spiritual and physical health. An excellent resource for someone just starting their own journey.

While the author's story was inspiring, the book wasn't what I was expecting. I found it to be more focused on exercise than spiritual life. It also includes a ton of questions with scriptures to look up and they seemed out of context and chosen just to fit the exercise focus of the book.

Quite a useful small book for those like myself. 60ish and in need of some good walks. Always good to do some practical walking and talking to GOD!

I identified with McHenry's experience in PrayWalk. She succintly conveys the authentic heart of a woman who prays for her community, her family, and herself. She shows the impact this discipline can have on everyone involved, especially those who pray. What I appreciated was the connection she had with those she worked with, taught, and lives with. She showed the changes that took place not only in those she prayed for, but also, most humbling in her own thoughts, mind and attitude. Although prayerwalking and prayer, itself, has taken on a life of its own in the past ten years by focusing so much on prayer events and the results of many people coming together to pray, it is the simple act of daily prayer that is focused on here. When is all said and done, this is what remains central: simple faith in action. Thank you, Janet for holding onto this truth.

Originally published in 2001, this edition is the 10th-anniversary edition with some updates, which add to the book. The premise is simple - pray while you walk. McHenry gives lots of tips on ways to make that happen and happen effectively. Much of the book is inspirational, not a boring jumble of facts about walking. I may not start prayerwalking myself until I conquer some of my arthritis issues, but just the words on prayer are motivational enough. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a stronger prayer life.

I'll admit. When I was told I'd won this book through LibraryThing Early Reviewers, I groaned. Another book I'd compulsively said I'd like, just because it was free and I might vaguely be interested. It seemed to me like "health and wellness" gospel, like those books (which, admittedly, I haven't read) that go into how to lose weight from a biblical view, perhaps even going so far as to go into what Jesus ate, etc., as if Jesus' diet was somehow biblical, not cultural. I figured it'd be a book all about exercising, how praying can make you fit, maybe about how Jesus walked everywhere...So, I started reading this book so I could write a review, and was very pleasantly surprised. It's about a lady who struggled with finding time to pray. Who also struggled with finding the time and the motivation to exercise. Who's life was very busy and it didn't seem like there was a spare moment for much of anything. She eventually came upon the idea of prayer walking. She'd get up early in the morning and walk and pray for an hour. This revolutionized her spiritual walk (and her physical fitness). You wouldn't think this would be more than an article or so... "I revolutionized my spiritual and physical life by prayer walking an hour in the morning. You can too." But it is. The first part of the book is more her personal testimony and how she came upon prayer walking. The second part goes into the logistics of walking. Footwear, walking partners, safety, etc. All good stuff. The third part goes more into the spiritual aspects. She started praying for her neighborhood as she passed houses and businesses. There are also numerous stories from other folks who prayer walked. Practical tips, concerns, etc.Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this book and highly recommend it. When the lows get a little lower than 90+ around here, I think I'll try it myself.

Janet Holm McHenry gives her readers a grand vision for ministry in “PrayerWalk: Becoming a Woman of Prayer, Strength, and Discipline”. This little book piqued my interest because I used to be a walker and usually loved my time alone with God as I was out marveling in His creation. McHenry divides the book into two simple sections, while seamlessly interweaving the two disciplines: walking and praying. The first section covers walking, and the author does a great job of discussing the health benefits of this form of exercise, safety, walking with partners, choosing a course, as well as clothing and shoes. She is able to adequately cover all these issues without delving too deeply into boring statistics and a dissertation on the science of physical well-being. Her bibliography also provides many solid resources for those who are seeking more in-depth information on this popular fitness craze. In the second part of “PrayerWalk”, McHenry focuses her attention on prayer. She considers her morning walks as her “ministry”, and spends a large portion of the second half of her work detailing specific ways she has seen God move as a result of prayer, hers and others’. I especially enjoyed her chapter “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, in which she describes how praise and thankfulness become a natural response to God’s handiwork. “We begin to see the Artist behind this earth’s canvas when we spend time observing [H]is creation.”I also liked this author’s suggested list of people for whom we may want to intercede. Her list, in the chapter entitled “Take a Walk With Me”, includes those at our church, public servants, military personnel, teachers and other school staff, family, friends, and a whole host of others whose paths I often cross. I felt a new awareness of needs in my community that I’d never considered before. There are no doubt, better books that explore both walking and prayer as separate topics, but“PrayerWalk” is a perfect guide for those who want to learn how to have a deeper, more meaningful, prayer life, using walking as a catalyst. As McHenry states, “Prayerwalking is not an easy way to ‘take care of prayer’ while you get good exercise. It is a call to spend rich time with God, carrying others’ loads. The walking is only a means to make it all happen.”I think I’ll take a “PrayerWalk”.

What a great idea! I want to walk more, but I just can't find the motivation -- (where DID my motivation go??) Anyway, the idea here is that some of us want to walk more; and, we want to pray more. We just don't have the time! Hmmmmm, how about combining the two??? Not rocket science, but inspiring!! Who could stay in bed if you have a date with God??? (How's THAT for a guilt trip!!?)
