Read the full Review at Witchmag's BoekenplankFrom the start I had a problem with Ana’s mother. Protecting your child from monsters? No problem. But the monsters didn’t feel like monsters at all. And the reaction Ana’s mother had, was way overboard. This could be because I’ve read too much Twilight books were vampires aren’t monsters anymore, at least not all of them ;) But putting a spell on your daughter is way over the line…I also didn’t like Nikolai very much. He acted much too soon with certain things and he didn’t even try to see Ana’s side of the story when he, as a vampire killer, is confronted with her family. I seriously hope she dumps him for Elias who had always wanted the best for her and he’s just so cute ^^I like the idea behind this story. Especially the fresh, intriguing and unusual way vampires are described in this book. Although sadly enough they still can’t stand the sun ;) . I look forward to find out more about them and what kind of surprises the vampire culture will bring ;)The ending was a little too soon. I liked the fight between mom and dad, but everything fizzled out. I’d loved to see a bit more action. Not that I like to see dead or hurt witches and vampires, but there was so much tension at the end of the book that I was a bit disappointed that it ended like that, I expected a bit more ;)Overall rating 3 hearts. It was a nice story to read, but the ending was weak. The idea on the other hand was very refreshing and well done, although the love triangle is a bit cliché ;). Oh well, when it’s written well, it’s worth reading ;)

Ana Parker has a memorable sixteenth birthday - and not in a good way. She is worried about the ceremony that is supposed to confirm her as a True Witch but it requires magic and, despite what her mother tells her, she can't do magic. She learns that her father is a vampire king that her mother has never mentioned and won't answer questions about. Both of her parents want her to choose their side in the war that was supposed to be ended when her parents married and had a child. Ana doesn't know what to do. She meets Elias who is a member of the vampire king's guard who swears to protect her and who gives her some information about the witch-vampire fight. She also gets closer to Nikolai who is a member of the coven and who she has known for a while. She is interested in him but felt he was out of her league and, besides, her best friend also had a crush on him. Nikolai has been training all his life to become a vampire slayer which is sort of a problem because Ana is half-vampire.I enjoyed the St. Paul setting and seeing some familiar locations included in this story. This was an entertaining urban fantasy story. I liked Ana and sympathized with the tough decisions she had to make about her future. Personally, I'm on the side of the vampires since all of the violence and coercion came from Ana's mother who, it turns out, is queen of the witches. This is the first book in a trilogy. I can't wait to read the rest.

For such a short book, it was a great read! it take an idea that’s not quite new, and puts a new spin on it. The writing in the book is quick and fun to read. The characters were also quite memorable and extremely likable. The magic part of the book was simple, yet satisfying. It was fun to read Bea do her little spells with a simple “zap”. Plus, it was fun to see the magic at work. The plot itself was really good and easy to follow. Ana has wit, and her thoughts are extremely entertaining and funny to read. Naturally, in nearly all YA’s out there, there is a love triangle in the making, but it’s not cheesy or overdone. Both Nikolai and Elias are likable in their own way although I’d have to say, I’m leaning towards Elias a lot more. I’ve read one other of Hallaway’s books and enjoyed it as well, so I’m going to continue reading this series. It’s enjoyable and a fun light read without any overbearing cliches and cheesiness. Give this one a try if you’re into paranormal YA and want something quick between long epic reads.

My rating: 3.5 starsI loved the basic plot of the story, but I don't think the ending was really all that climactic after the huge build-up of suspense. Despite this book being normal novel length, it still felt like an incredibly light read and there wasn't much progress in the plot at all. I also completely hated Ana's mom and it got on my nerves how no one else was hating on her as much as would be obvious because of her behavior. But like I said, the basic plot is extremely interesting, so I'll probably be reading the next books in the series.

I’m going to start off by saying that I LOVE Tate Hallaway but unfortunately this is not my favorite work by her. I absolutely loved her Garnet Lacey series, which was an adult paranormal series filled with vampires, witches, goddesses and other magical beings! Almost To Die For is her new YA paranormal series, and while I really liked the premise, I felt the book was too short and rushed. It’s Ana’s 16th birthday, and this doesn’t just mean sweet 16 parties with giggling girls and birthday cake, because Ana is also a witch. Turning 16 is an important age in Ana’s coven, and it is her turn to take her initiation test and finally join in the inner circle. The test is pretty simple and a basic spell would be easy for any young witch, except Ana has a secret…..she can’t do magic…nadda…none.Things get a little more complicated when her long lost father shows up. Ana’s mother promptly freaks out and cast a spell on him that would be deadly to any human. She soon learns the shocking truth…She has vampire blood running through her veins, and they are the witches’ sworn enemy. Ana is now torn between two worlds. One she was raised in and one she didn’t even know existed.Ana goes back and forth between her mother’s world and her father’s world in the book, and the reader gets a glimpse of both. While I loved the characters I wanted more detail in both the raising action and the climactic battle at the end. I was very interested in the vampire’s world. Every paranormal author likes to put their own twist on the classic blood suckers, and I love reading what they come up with. Hallaway is no different. She made an underground world where vampires sleep during the day in humid recessed wall cubbies….in the nude, no less. Descendants from the underworld they became slaves to the witches long ago. While Ana father is the king of their world now, not every vampire wants to serve him. Some still believe they should do the witches bidding and are rising against him. This means they are also coming for Ana.While Ana tries to sneak around her mother’s watchful eye, dodge rebel vampires against the king, and figure out as much about her heritage as she can, she is also crushing on a rather hunky member of her coven….Only he hunts vampires!I really want to read the next book in this series and hope the story is not only longer but evolves more and offers more details on each side of Ana’s life.

Ana Parker has always been the loner, the loser, the freak. She has long dark hair, pale skin, and mismatched eyes. Ana can count her friends on one hand. It’s easy she has exactly two. High school is rough, being labeled the freakish witch girl. On her sixteenth birthday she is to be initiated into the local coven. This would normally be an exciting time in a young witch’s life, too bad she can’t do magic. On her way to the initiation with her mother, a man appears outside of her house and tells her that he is her father. The problem is he tells her that he is the prince of the vampires and she is Princess Anastasija Ramses Parker. Since the beginning witches and vampires have been mortal enemies. The time has come for Ana to choose her place. Is she a witch like her mother or a bloodsucking vamp like her dad? Being a sixteen year old freak in high school is enough to drive any girl crazy. Try being a witch/vampire princess, having to choose between worlds and parents while a hot vamp and witch all vie for your attention. What ever happened to sweet sixteen? Welcome to Ana’s world.Almost to Die For: A Vampire Princess Novel by Tate Hallaway was too cute. I loved Ana’s sarcastic comments through the book and her geeky awkwardness. This was a short book (I read it in one sitting) and it gave just enough detail without being too vague. The premise was an interesting and original take on vampire/witch lore that I hadn’t encountered before. The only thing I wanted different is I would have liked some more scenes with Taylor. She is Ana’s only human friend and seems very unique, but really clueless as to everything that is going on (along with all of the other humans). If two girls at my school were going around “hexing” people I would be questioning some things. All in all I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to get the next one.

The first thing that attracted me to this book was the cover. The girl is gorgeous! I honestly wasn’t too sure what to expect when I got my hands on a copy of this. I thought it was a light, fun, fluffy read, and while I was not disappointed by any means, this book proved to be much more than that. Within the first chapter or so, I was totally sucked in.Anastasija Ramses Parker is used to not being normal, she has been raised a witch, with just one problem…her magic has never worked. There are few True Witches but Ana is supposed to be one…well when she fails Initiation in the Coven where she can be a full True Witch. Things get confusing because enter Vampires. Her father is a vampire, and to top it off, a vampire prince. he soon learns that she is a product of a gone awry treaty between witches and vampires. Her father, the prince of all vampires and her mother, surprisingly the queen of all witches banded together for a short time to try and create peace…Ana came out of it and peace never did. It is an all out war between witches and vampires. Oh my goodness.. and then the boys. Nikolai is a True Witch in her coven, totally gorgeous, sings in a band, and is interested in Ana! Oh, and is also conveniently a vampire hunter. That could put a damper on a relationship. And then there’s Elias. Vampire knight. Chivalrous, etc. If you’ve been on the fence about this one, I highly recommend that you pick it up. The whole ‘Twilight meets whatever’ situation is so inaccurate! This book is nothing like Twilight. Suffice to say, I’m soooo excited for the next installment which is out on May 3rd, 2011.

While not the most original I enjoy both vampire and witch themed books and this book contained the traits I normally like. There is the obvious love triangle and Ana turns from being the target of jokes and abuse by the popular crowd to being wooed by both a handsome witch and a hot vampire. The story had it's odd moments like I found it odd that after being absent from her life for 16 years once her father shows up she immediately calls him and thinks of him as dad. She mentions at one point she calls him that just to irk her mom but it doesn't explain the rest of the time she thinks of him in that way. It just seems like she accepts him in that role way too easily. The one unique part of the story I loved and found fascinating was that the witches once enslaved vampires. I cannot wait to learn more about that history and what is going to happen between the witches, the vampires who still serve them and the vampires who wish to be free. The CharactersAna's character was a bit all over the map for me. One minute she is totally crushing on Nikolai, then running off with Elias, her father's vampire captain, to the underground vampire lair and then skipping out on them to go bowling with Nikolai. This would not have bothered me so much except for the fact that she doesn't seem to be bothered much that she is attracted to both Nikolai and Elias and doesn't think it's wrong to go flitting back and forth between the two. If there was a little more agonizing over her behavior I would have had more sympathy. In fact, at the end she makes a decision that had me thinking "Seriously?! It doesn't strike you as wrong to deceive both guys like that?" Elias was probably my favorite character. He was so old fashioned that he reminded me of a knight who was protecting and wooing his lady. Especially in contrast to Nikolai's hot headed and viciousness Elias struck me as the type of guy who would always be there for you but not smother you. Nikolai did not grab me as much. His character was just as spacey as Ana. He's the son of vampire hunters and in training to become one himself but he makes an exception for Ana because he's had a crush on her for so long and is under the protection of the coven. But when she asks him what would happen if she were no longer with the coven he has to waffle and say he doesn't know. So he will only make an exception for her if she remains under the coven protection and otherwise he would consider killing her? Come on!The RomanceAs you could probably tell from what I thought about the characters I was not all that enamored on Ana's relationship with Nikolai and much preferred her interactions with Elias. Though to be honest though I did not feel the chemistry between Ana and either guy. She struck me as being a little too shallow and flighty to be with Elias but I did not feel like her relationship with Nikolai was based on much.As I write this I realize how negative it sounds but I did have fun reading it. I loved Elias and am curious to see what comes between the witches and the vampires in the next book.

I have to admit to that I liked Almost to Die For more than I thought I would. Ana is a lovable character, and her inner dialogue is the perfect mix of quirk and real sentiment. In one part she explains the fact that her class schedule goes from physics to gym as bad karma. She does this, and so many other little things, in such a cute way that I couldn’t help but smile. Ana did that to me occasionally-she helped me finish the book and enjoy some parts of it immensely.I only wish that those parts could have lasted throughout the whole novel. I enjoyed the parts where Ana was alone or dating, but the episodes with her mother were not as good. Her mother had some big secret that she wouldn’t share. Some big secret that could save Ana’s life, and I found it really hard to believe that a normal parent would do this. Occasionally, the her mother’s spoken dialogue sound forced as well. Her mother’s spells seem awkward. I didn’t like that all the spells had to rhyme, and they reminded me more of Dr. Suess than a scary incantation.Overall I think that Tate Hallaway did a good job of creating a character that is lovable and likable. I don’t think this book was exactly for me, but I do plan to pass it on to someone who I think it was written for. In the right hands, I think Almost to Die For could be a great thing.

I am not quite sure how to describe this book other than the fact that it was fun…I love change of pace YA books that have quirky mouthy main characters…and this book certainly had that in the form of Ana…who might or might be a really bad witch or a really good vampire or actually half of each. That was the funny part. Her father married her mother in order to stop a vamp/witch war and Ana’s mother has never told her one thing about her vampire dad until he sort of just appears in her yard on her sixteenth birthday. The book was really good and really funny. Ana considers herself a geeky nerd who is a failure at being a witch. She has no clue about her vampire part until she accidentally licks the blood off of the face of a classmate in a freak gym accident. And there is a weird naked vampire who says he is betrothed to Ana while at the same time she is sort of involved with Nicholai who is a witch and a vampire hunter and in a great band. You have to get the drift of this book…just action packed and mysterious and really really funny at the same time…Ana sort of reminded me of Rachel from Hex Hall. Cheeky interesting geeky main characters who are fun and brave and get into major scrapes.I have not heard anything at all about this book…I think I just randomly Kindled it one day while reading about the author on someone’s blog. But the author writes cleverly and skillfully and I would definitely be up for another book or two in this series…

I have to say the first thing that attracted me to this book was the cover. The two different colored eyes definitely caught my attention. Then -- “vampire”. As soon as I found out it was about vampires, I had to get it to see what it was all about!I hate to say that Ana’s voice narrating the story took a few (fifty or so) pages to get used to. I understand writing first person POV like an inner monologue, but some of it was a little too immature for my taste. However, once I could look past that, I actually found her voice and made up words endearing to her character. The other characters were well fleshed out and fun to interact with in the story. The bad guy was a douche, as expected. The best friends stayed friends, though there was definitely some tension in the story - as there is in real life with some friends some times. I have to say that I was a little surprised with Nik’s reaction to vampires, especially after he seemed bitter at first to know he had to follow in his father’s footsteps. So, when he went all anti-vampire, I was a little baffled. I loved Elias and can say nothing wrong about him - though, like Ana, my feelings for him conflict with Nik’s… as I heart them both equally.I’ll have to say that the climax was a little anti-climatic for me. I thought it was good, but the author spent so much time building up the story to that point, it seemed very rushed and short… almost like an afterthought. I like more action in my climax - more airtime. However, this is the first book in a series, so maybe this book is just building to even more awesomeness in the next? I sure hope so!
