About this ebook

We studied Jamestown in great depth a few years ago, just in time for the 400 year anniversary. I was surprised how little a knew about the settlement and its history. This little booklet came out of my research. I hope you enjoy getting to know this fascinating history as much as we did.

    Jamestown - Catherine McGrew Jaime

    Introduction

Most Americans think of 1776 as the birth of our nation. But our country’s beginnings can be traced back 169 years before we declared our independence from England. Jamestown, the first permanent roots in British America was settled in 1607. There had been Europeans in America before 1607 – the Spanish had settled in St. Augustine (Florida) in 1565 and the English had attempted settlements in Roanoke (North Carolina) in 1585 and 1587. But Jamestown was different than the others: it was English, and it was successful.

By 1619, one year before the Pilgrims had even landed in Plymouth; Jamestown had established the first representative government in America. From those English roots would grow 13 English colonies – which would officially become the United States of America in 1776.
