Introduction
Getting prescription drugs after visiting a doctor has become a ritual for most of people nowadays since people are accustomed to think that taking drugs are an effective way in curing medical problems. For some people, there may be some psychological reasons behind taking medicine. Some patients show urge to obtain prescription even if there is no need. In contrast to these patients, there are patients who strongly oppose taking any medications because of their side effects or they simply want to avoid taking them if they have the options.
In order to maximize the therapeutic effects and minimize the side effects of a drug, we need to learn more about how drugs interact with our body. There are many drugs which act similarly but one drug may be more suitable than the other even though these drugs are treating the same disease.
The study of the effects of drugs on the body or pharmacology may be a complicated subject for many people. This book intends to describe pharmacology to the everyday people in a concise and easily understand manner. The more you understand how drugs interact with your body, the more help you can offer to yourself. Best of all, you can communicate with your doctors easier and receive more supports from your doctors. In addition, you may discover there are other medications available to you or to your love ones beside what doctors prescribed.
Remember the information contain in this book should NOT be used as a substitute for consultation with practicing medical professional.

1.1 How a drug is born?
Substances that used to treat illness are commonly called drugs. As people discovered new uses in old drugs or found new drugs, the list of drugs will be updated from time to time. In the United States, the drugs are approved by FDA, and it takes on average 12 years and over $350 million dollars to get new drug from the laboratory onto the pharmacy shelf. Before a company that developed a drug can submit to FDA for review, it needs three and a half year of laboratory testing. If the FDA accepts to review the new drug, it will enter three phases of clinical trials. The post-approval trials that are sometimes a condition attached by the FDA to the approval and this will be known as the Phase 4 Trial or Post Marketing Surveillance Trial.
