    by Linda Shayne

Kendall’s truck swerved dangerously on the black ice, hidden on the highway leading to Bose, Montana, a place she once called home. She turned on the radio in an attempt to calm her nerves. No one was crazy enough to drive five hundred miles in this weather, but it was Christmas Eve and her dad was waiting up for her, even though she was twenty-three.

A Garth Brooks country song provided some warmth and Kendall shifted into low gear to take the next curve at fifteen miles per. She always felt good when Garth’s gravelly, velvet voice filled the air. Outside, rain turned to sleet and then snow.

Despite her better instincts, Kendall sped up; she had to pick up the pace or she would never make it home. Snow covered fields and flocked spruce trees glided by her in soft focus, as if she were in one of those 3-D movie theaters and wasn’t wearing the required glasses.

He really was the reason she left town, that and there were no jobs in Bose.

When Kendall was approached by her aunt's friend to sell medical equipment in Houston, she jumped at the chance to move. Living in a big city had its advantages. Shopping was incredible, there were sales almost every week, and her dating life was filled with guys wearing lab
