About this ebook
In this book, six psychological theories of human behavior are given a Christian interpretation. The goal is to incorporate ALL of God’s truth to more fully understand our struggle to become princes. Each chapter describes a psychological theory and then a Christian perspective. We close the chapter with five introspective questions. After all, God is the author of ALL truth, not just biblical.

INTRODUCTION
(for you outsiders)
While working as a counselor at the county jail, my job was to screen new inmates to assess their mental status, compare that with their history and then determine the need for services. For those inmates who had been on psychotropic medications just prior to their arrest, we would call their doctor or pharmacy for confirmation. As long as the doctor’s records matched the inmate’s testimony, those medications would be continued.
Except for rare occasions, we would not start meds for inmates who did not have a recent psych history. Even though being stuck in an overcrowded jail came with a slew of difficult stressors, my job was not to anesthetize jail-related anxiety with medication simply because one arrived without the usual coping methods (i.e. marijuana, alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine, pain meds, co-dependent relationships). But of course, the inmates didn’t see it that way. I mean, after all, this is America; we are the land of entitlement! I need something to help me sleep!
was the typical cry. What with homie on the top bunk who never washes and junior on the floor who snores all night, how can you expect me to sleep in this despicable place? I need to see the psychiatrist ASAP!
Inmates could at any time kite
(jail slang for send) a written request to our department. Each morning our mailboxes would be littered with requests, along with the new screenings for the day as well as suicide watch sheets from the last twenty-four hours. As soon as we could, we’d pull the inmates out of their despicable
cell and into another despicable little room to address their concerns.
One by one, I’d have to give the bad news.
Let’s see now,
I’d begin, "you say you were on Prozac four years ago but quit taking it because it didn’t seem to be working, plus it wasn’t getting any cheaper. Ever since, you’ve been self-medicating with cocaine and alcohol, which if my calculations are correct haven’t gotten any cheaper either and cost quite a bit more than Prozac. And now that you’re stuck here in jail with nothing, you’d like to get back on your Prozac and a sleeping medication. Well…I’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news is that based on your history I cannot refer you to our doctor for meds. The good news is that nobody I know of has ever died from lack of sleep. Huh? Oh I see, you’re thinking now that if you don’t get your Prozac and a sleeping medication you might be suicidal. In fact, you’re sure of it. Give you what you want or you’re going to kill yourself.
OK, I’ve got more good news and bad news. The good news is that, yes, suicidal comments, however contrived, will get you in to see the psychiatrist. The bad news is that before you see the doctor, we are going to have to move you to an area of the jail called the
