    Although World War I was rampaging across Europe, 14-year-old Phillip’s days in the small rural community of Drennan’s Crossing on the banks of the Kentucky River were humdrum and boring until an old man named Joe came sauntering down the dusty road that summer and rented a shack on the banks of the river.

    Joe swept into Phillip’s life “...like a rush of water down a narrow creek bed—widening, deepening, opening up fascinating new channels.” As their friendship grew, Phillip learned many things from Joe about nature and the God who created it. Then another stranger appeared in Drennan’s Crossing, and Phillip learned that there were secrets in Joe’s past that might be best left undisturbed.

    Suddenly, the murder of thousands in Europe took a back seat to the murder of one old man at Drennan’s Crossing, and Phillip was forced to face the violent feelings in his own heart. Struggling to come to terms with evil and the lack of justice for those who perpetrate it, he began to question God’s role in the scheme of things, as well as his own purpose in life.

    “Most everythin’ was put here fer a purpose,” he remembers Joe once said. But what was the point, Phillip agonized, if everything ended in death? Then he discovered something stronger than death, something more powerful than hate—the legacy of Joe and Drennan’s Crossing.
