    Biography

John Treadwell Dunbar, a novelist, travel writer and photographer, is a retired lawyer with an undergraduate degree in political science, and three years in the United States Army. He lives in the American West and has traveled throughout Guatemala, Belize, Mexico and Europe, among other places.

    Fiction

Chasing Sovereignty: chronicles the adventures of Doctor Calvin James during Guatemala's catastrophic revolution of the early 1980s when the noted archeologist and reluctant hero journeys through steamy jungles and lofty highlands of this Central American country in search of the Great Jaguar Paw, the infamous Mayan leader of Marxist rebels attempting to overthrow Guatemala's right-wing dictatorship.

Trapped between these two worlds, the American Calvin James must come to terms with military and political realities that test his courage, moral fiber and cultural sensitivities. Thrust into the lives of exotic Mayan Indians persecuted relentlessly by the Guatemalan army, and seeking redemption from his tortured past, Calvin James is pushed to the limits of endurance emotionally, spiritually and physically. It is only through the love of a young Mayan guerrilla fighter that he finds solace in the chaotic world of the Maya whose lives have been turned upside down by abject poverty, racial hatred and a war that sees no end.

    Non-Fiction

Dunbar's Oregon Coast: Having traveled up and down the Oregon Coast over a span of thirty years, J.T. Dunbar has written an altogether different travel narrative filled with personal anecdotes, natural and historical facts, and practical advice for the contemporary visitor drawn to this Pacific Northwest wonderland of secluded coves, towering headlands, quaint seaside villages and endless miles of pristine beaches.

This verdant land of high deserts, pinion-juniper forests, lofty mountains and deep red canyons has also served as a backdrop to America's Wild West heritage. Whether drawn by the amber light, the laid-back ambiance or the seductive scenery, painters, sculptors, writers, actors and other creatives are continuously drawn to these grand landscapes, as was J. T. Dunbar. Sometimes humorous and packed with historical facts, and his own peculiar observations, the author of Dunbar's New Mexico will take you on an eclectic and rewarding journey through this enchanting land of enchantment that you will not soon forget.

Dunbar's Arizona: Travel along with J. T. Dunbar as he explores this complex state of many dimensions, from the northern superlatives of the Grand Canyon, and Canyon de Chelly in Navaho country, to the rugged mining districts in the far west and deep south, and upscale enclaves at Sedona, regarded by many as the most beautiful place in America. Infused with his own peculiar insights, Dunbar's writings expose the harsh and dangerous realities that exist down along the Mexican border in such places as Organ Pipe National Monument, and infuses his renditions with history, science, cultural observations and practical advice for the contemporary traveler.
