About the Author

Preface

This book is designed for people who are learning English as a foreign language and wish to improve their use of English phrasal verbs. This is the second set of 101 phrasal verbs by the author.

This book contains 101 phrasal verbs that are frequently used in English, arranged alphabetically. Each phrasal verb is provided with two examples of its use. The examples are provided as answers to questions from the IELTS test, but the book can be used by any teenage or adult learner who is at intermediate level.

1. Abide by

Meaning: follow (rules, laws)

Example 1: What is the main purpose of laws, in your opinion?

I think that the main purpose of most laws is to protect citizens. For example, if people didn't abide by laws about stealing, people wouldn't feel safe or feel that their property was safe.

Example 2: Do you think children should wear uniforms to school?

Definitely. It means that all the children wear the same thing so there is no competition to look more fashionable than others. I think this is a rule all children and schools should abide by.

2. Account for

Meaning: explain

Example 1: Why do you think people commit crimes?

Many people say it is because of poverty, but I don't think this accounts for a lot of crime. For example, many poor people don't commit crimes and some rich people do.

Example 2: Do you think the state should provide free health care for citizens?

I think that it is a bad idea. I think people should pay for their own health care to make them more responsible for their health. In countries that provide free health care, it often accounts for a lot of the government budget.

3. Act on

Meaning: to do something according to the actions, information or suggestions of others

Example 1: Do you often buy things on the Internet?

Yes, I do. Sometimes I already know what I want to buy, but sometimes I act on the recommendations of my friends or online reviews.

Example 2: Which people often give advice to young people?

Young people might get advice from their teachers, their friends or even strangers, but I think that most young people get advice from, and act on advice from, their parents.

4. Advise against

Meaning: suggest that something is not a good idea

Example 1: Do you think that young people should always do what their parents say?

I think that
