The Lies We Were Told, the Stories We Have Heard, and the Legends We Have Believed In (return to Contents)

No wonder why we are all so screwed up.

As indicated in the first pillar, Reality and the Truth, we are all the creature of our reality. In fact, the whole world is shaped and conditioned by its reality. For example, wild animals are conditioned by nature and the world of vegetation is shaped by the natural environment. This is so for humanity too, except people are also shaped and conditioned by the human element. By the human element, we mean parental guidance, religiosity, nationality, the educational system, the media, man-made laws and order, and so on. There are millions of different realities on this planet governing billions of individuals physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Most of these realities are not only different from one another, but they also contradict, oppose and sometimes even destroy one another. The irony is that the human race claims to be the highest of creation, yet its species is often mean and unkind to one another, bears so many divisions and hostilities, and creates so much destruction.

Wait a minute, we are almost lost here. Where is the truth? Remember the story about the judge in Pillar One who told the victim and the victimizer as well as the secretary of the court that they all were right? Now that so many different realities are taken as the truth and the beholder of each reality believes that their reality is the only truth while others are wrong, we want you to be the judge. So, dear reader, tell us which acclaimed truth is the truth?

From an early age, we heard bedtime stories from parents, babysitters and storytellers. We watched fairy-tale cartoons on the television and in the cinemas. We listened to preachers, commercials and so on. Some of these fables were created for entertainment while others were made to teach a lesson. Some were based on assumptions while others were constructed for personal gain such as financial, political or spiritual power. As we grew up, these stories remained hidden in our subconscious mind, affecting our thoughts and, consequently, our behaviour.

The eyewitness testimonies claimed by many people in the past and in recent times, which helped some individuals achieve the level of prophecy, holiness or sainthood, are in most cases shams or deliberate illusions. In the Samkhya School of Indian Philosophy (see Reality and the Truth: Pillar One), it was explained that
