About this ebook

God is still speaking. Yet, so many people, including believers, are having difficulty hearing Him. Recognizing His voice is not just a privilege given to a select few. We only hear Him based on where we are in our relationship with Him and not where He is. Irrespective of the level of your walk with Him, you can grow in it by spending more time with Him. This demands that you give yourself wholly to His Word, spend time in His presence, so as to hear His voice (will), and to know the ways to act on it.

Hearing and Knowing The Voice of God Will Equip You To:

- Discern His Voice
- Align Your Life With His Word
- Deepen Your Communion and Commitment To Him

    Appreciation

    I humbly wish to acknowledge…

Lucille S.D Sturdivant (My Mother): Your exemplary walk in the Word has given me direction from my youth. At nearly ninety-one years of age, eighty years since accepting Christ, her motto is, "…and you know what? I’m not tired yet!"

Daddy and Mummy G.O (My Father and Mother in the Lord): Your life is a testimony to the faithfulness of God, and His commitment to those who abide in His Word. Your humility, holiness and continued prayers for my family and I, are ‘gifts’ that are greater than any materialistic treasure. May your well of refreshment never run dry!

Pamela D. Modupe (My Wife): We have been in each other’s life for nearly forty years, married for 35. You accepted me on a promise, when we were just teenagers, and believed in me and my vision. Together, we have watched the Almighty God surprise us and keep His Word. The Best Is Yet To Come!

    Foreword

In Hearing and Knowing the will of God, Pastor Sturdivant broaches an extremely important subject in the body of Christ. Every true child of God should be interested in hearing from the Father and receiving instruction on how to navigate the maze of life.

From time to time we will find ourselves standing at crossroads of life or the threshold of a breakthrough without knowing what to do next or where to turn. This work will illuminate understanding and enhance our sensitivity to God’s word, His will and our destiny-impacting decisions. God speaks eloquently and you need to hear from Him. Please find time to be still in His presence and listen for His voice. He wants to talk to you. Not just now but for the rest of your life.

    God bless you.

    Pastor E.A. Adeboye

    Prologue

As believers, we have the ability to hear the voice of God and have a close relationship with Him. However, some are missing out because they have not learned how to listen to Him with their spirit. The only way we’ll be able to communicate with God is by using our spirit to talk, listen, walk and see Him, because God is Spirit. This calls for a growing relationship with Him. Not only have we been privileged to commune with Him at any time, His Word is also at our disposal, to meditate upon, so we can grow in the knowledge of Him. You can get His Word so deeply rooted in you, that when He instructs you to do something, you will sense a prompting by Him in your spirit. It will be so clear, until it will sound as if you heard an audible voice.

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me

    (John 10:27).

Thus, knowing His voice (Word, will, way, presence) is imperative if you really want to have an intimate communion with Him. It is impossible to follow a voice that is foreign or unfamiliar to you. What causes many people not to know the voice of God (and hence, our purpose in life) or trust His will, is that we are not familiar with His ‘sound,’ movements, wants and ways!

This book reveals fundamental principles that will assist you in knowing His voice. It will also help you to upgrade your walk with Him so that you can live your life as He wills, and not by trial and error. There is a breakthrough prayer at the end of each chapter. This will improve your communication with Him. Please, endeavor to pray them with all of your being, as if your life depends on them. In all actuality; your life does depend on your prayers. You see; how far one goes in their life hinges on their willingness to act on the instructions they receive from Him.

It is my prayer that God will open your eyes to see the deep truths contained therein, open your ears to hear the inaudible and strengthen you, not only to take action, but also to finish strong. May God’s blessing rest upon you and make you a precious vessel unto honor in Him. In Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen!

    Chapter 1

    The Voice of Life

The voice of the Lord is over the waters; The God of glory thunders; The Lord is over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty

    (Psalm 29:3, 4).

One of the primary ways that we hear God’s voice is through our spirit. Before the fall, Adam and Eve delighted in hearing the voice of God in the Garden. Immediately after the fall, the same voice that brought joy and comfort, now brought them fear. They were capable of hearing God’s voice directly without any restrictions. As man began to spread across the face of the earth, only a select few had the opportunity to hear God’s voice directly.

The Hebrew word for ‘voice’ is qol which sometimes has been translated ‘sound.’ It is possible to hear it without necessarily hearing and understanding the voice. If it is a spiritual sound, only spiritual ears can hear although to the natural ear it might sound as if it is just a natural noise. When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan, there was a voice from God that declared Him as His beloved Son. Most likely, only John saw the vision and heard the voice of God.

According to the book of John, chapter 12, when a voice answered Jesus as He prayed, some people near Him heard it as a thunder while others heard ‘something’ and without understanding the sound, said that an angel had spoken.

When Jesus encountered Paul on the road to Damascus in a vision, he heard His voice and instruction but all those around him heard a voice (sound) but did not understand anything. All these were supernatural events that affected the surrounding people differently depending on their spiritual development in God.

    SPIRITUAL PERCEPTION

But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God

    (I Corinthians 2:10, 11).

The Holy Spirit is always available to lead us. It is never a question as to whether He has ‘spoken’ but rather whether we can hear and understand Him. Jesus said that His sheep hear His voice and that the
