Introduction

As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, working with symbols metaphor and archetypes is a daily occurrence. One such resource for these is The Tarot, in facts it’s a veritable treasure trove that lends itself to providing a unique avenue into personal transformation and healing.

Visual, auditory, intellectual and scentual, we can access the archetypes and symbols within them in a range of ways and this provides quick and efficient change opportunities to all, particularly when we work on a number of levels at one time.

The traditional Tarot deck is made up of 78 cards, the twenty-two major arcana cards which we will explore here and fifty-six minor arcana or lesser cards which provide details on the more mundane aspects of existence in daily life. The minor arcana cards provide descriptive details which add value when the cards are used in a traditional Tarot Reading setting but our focus is on the archetypes of the major arcana.

The twenty-two Major Arcana (meaning greater secrets) can be viewed in two ways, the first as twenty-two different archetypes or personalities or secondly as the journey of the embodied soul. In the latter approach, 0 represents the Soul and the cards 1 through 21 represent the lessons or initiations that the Soul experiences in each physical incarnation.

Regardless of the preferred approach the 22 Tarot Archetypes can enrich lives, providing a different shaped lens with which to view actions, responses…the things we do. And we can use them to directly access new skills, wisdom and attributes that may previously have been absent as well as to strengthen in specific areas. They can provide new perspective and can re-source us.

The Tarot Archetypes are set out individually 0 through 21. Each has its own description which includes;

1. Attributes, lesson or offering from the archetype

2. The aromatic components for a blend for each.

3. A series of
