Il Simple Present
Il simple present (I live, I work, I do) si usa quando si vuole esprimere:
1) azioni abituali, reiterate, continuative.
He lives in London.
He works at the mall.
They study Latin and ancient Greek.
2) ovvietà, dati di fatto, constatazioni, annunci (TV, radio).
The sun rises in the East.
Cats purr.
The moon reflects the sunlight.
The brand new Victoria Outlet opens at 6.00 p.m.
N.B. Quando in italiano abbiamo una subordinata ipotetica (conditional sentence) o temporale (time clause) col verbo al futuro, in Inglese quest’ultimo va sempre al simple present.
Quando verrai a casa, ti racconterò tutta la storia: when you come home, I will tell you the whole story.
Se andrai in Inghilterra, ti lascerò: If you go to England, I will break up with you.
Il Present Continuous
Il present continuous (I am doing, I am working) si usa per esprimere:
1) un’azione che sta avvenendo nel momento in cui si parla.
I am writing a letter for my boss.
I am cooking for my children.
She is sunbathing.
2) un’azione che non necessariamente sta avvenendo nell’istante in cui si parla, ma piuttosto nel periodo in corso, allo stato attuale. Può anche essere un’abitudine, una routine quotidiana.
I’m attending a new program at Cambridge University. (in questo periodo frequento un nuovo corso all’università)
I’m reading a boring essay for my examination. (non ho il libro in mano in questo preciso momento, ma in questo periodo sono alle prese con un saggio noioso per l’esame. La frase sarebbe identica se volessi esprimere che lo sto leggendo proprio adesso; la differenza tra le due la si evince dal contesto).
He’s always losing his temper (qui c’è un’accezione di ripetitività, perdere la pazienza è un comportamento frequente. In certi casi potrebbe esserci una punta di fastidio da parte del parlante verso un atteggiamento riscontrato spesso – questo non significa che la persona a cui
