Reviews for Able Danger
5 ratings1 review
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Able Danger, by Kensington Roth, is a fast-moving novel of spies, politics and international intrigue. The characters travel between the US, China, ToraBora and Italy, with convincing accents and dialog well-rendered, even to the realism of simultaneous conversations and bracketed captions for foreign words. Scenery is carefully described almost like dressing a movie set, and action given in detail. But the novel loses speed during political monologues, when the line between character opinion and authored facts grows blurred, and when the obfuscation of politi-speak weaves its way into the narrative. The main protagonist, Agent Harrison Court introduces himself in chapter two, with a quick first-person nod to James Bond. Then a third-person narrator takes over. Court, who works for a “nonexistent sector of the CIA,” is heading for a meeting in Hong Kong on his way to meet his intended “China doll” bride. Plot, counter-plot and conspiracy theory intertwine from this first discussion, with fictionalized real-world terrorism coming under curiously confident suspicion. Special effects abound in the threat of super-weapons, high-speed car-chases, and “B-52s bombers landing two thousand pound bombs.”This is probably not a book for readers who find misused words distracting or prefer to keep their real-world events and opinions separate from the fictional world. The mixture of entertainment and conspiracy theory probably works best for those not overly invested in a different point of view. But the short chapters move fast and the conclusion promises a fascinating direction for the sequel.

Chapter 1
FAMILY DINNER
THE FAMILY DINNER IS A GLIMPSE OF A GRAVITY WEAPON BEING TESTED ON A SPECIFIC HOUSEHOLD IN SUBURBIA, USA. THE DINNER PROVIDES A SLIGHTLY SURREAL SNAPSHOT OF A FAMILY'S ACTIVITY AS A MOTIF OF WHAT MAY HAPPEN OBSERVED FROM OUTSIDE LOOKING IN.
THEIR INNOCENCE REVEALS THE OBLIVION THAT TAKES YOU ON A JOURNEY EXPOSED TO THE EVIL MINDS THAT PLOT DESTRUCTION LURKING OUTSIDE YOUR FRONT DOOR. A TYPICAL FAMILY OCCURRENCE CAN TURN INTO ONE LESS FAMILY MEMBER.
It's a sunny, summer day looking down upon a suburban middle upper-class neighborhood. A sport utility vehicle drives down the street in the background. The backyard sky of a specific household is clouded with dark-gray shadows. The bug zapper emits a vibrant glow and the landscape lights flicker twice, then shut off. The swing set, off in the distance in the backyard, is complete with three swings and a slide. The total sky has increased in darkness.
From the backyard you are guided to the interior of a fairly large kitchen focusing on a center island complete with four burners, a sink, and two stools. The counter behind the center island has a small wine rack with two bottles of wine. There are several wine glasses in a small overhead glass rack. Behind the center island is the refrigerator and stove. The front entrance of the house begins with the foyer which leads to the hallway opening to the kitchen. One side of the kitchen leads to the living room. At the far end of the kitchen is a table with six chairs encircled by a large bay window that displays a complete view of the backyard.
The family consists of the wife, in her early forties, who is a happy average housewife-mother with a long pony tail. The kitchen is occupied by the wife at the center island preparing dinner. There's a large-sized pot of water boiling on the center island burner. She is cutting carrots and placing lettuce head leaves in a small salad spinner.
Janie who captivates the essence of innocence is a happy, average 10-year-old girl with long pigtails. From the kitchen, looking out the bay window, the daughter Janie can be seen. She's swinging playfully in the backyard and the dark sky in the background does not distract her. Swinging back and forth reveals her happy, smiling face. The family dog, a Labrador, is resting on the living room floor.
And the husband, in his forties, is a happy, average father in good health reading a Popular Science magazine wearing a blue polo shirt. As he walks into the kitchen from the living room, he approaches the center island and pulls up a stool to accompany his wife preparing dinner. He puts his magazine down on the center island and continues reading. The entire kitchen is centered around the wife preparing dinner and then the husband pauses from reading his magazine.
Hey honey...hmmm, what are you cooking? It smells delicious?
Your favorite...can't you tell?
The wife places a bottle of white wine and two glasses on the center island and gently pours the spirits filling both glasses. The husband indulges a taste, as does the wife, and he continues reading. They're a happy couple part of a joyous family. The husband inquiries about their daughter and turns around to look out the bay window noticing Janie swinging about.
Where's Janie?
She's in the backyard playing on the swings.
The wife pulls out a small tray of stuffed mushrooms from the oven and places it on the center island burners. She pokes a small mushroom with her fork and places it into her husband's mouth. Wow, absolutely out of this world. Why aren't you wearing your Kiss the Chef hat so I'll have an excuse? That's really tasty. I can't wait for the main course so we can enjoy a nice family dinner.
The wife leans toward the husband for a kiss.
The playroom is positioned off the kitchen towards the back of the house. The husband walks past the kitchen table and enters the playroom where his on is squatting on the floor in front of the television playing video games. As he walks back into the kitchen, the lights flicker twice. He looks up at the kitchen ceiling light-fan and notices the lights flicker again and the fan blades cease their rotation. He quickly turns to look outside through the bay window observing Janie on the swing and cannot help notice a flash of light similar to heat lighting paint the entire sky.
The loud, annoying grinding motor of the food processor suddenly stops. The husband walks toward the wife to embrace and comfort her. Their faces show signs of fear and uncertainty. Their son a happy, average 12-year-old boy comes into the kitchen to tell his parents something in a whiny tone then hurries back to the playroom. Mom n' dad the TV shut off and I can't play my video game anymore...I was winning too.
A glass paper weight, a pencil-pen holder, knickknacks, a napkin holder, and glasses all fall over and slowly slide off the countertop. The objects fall and hit the floor almost in slow motion and the paper weight and glasses shatter in many pieces. The wife's pony tail is standing straight up, as if pulled from above.
The center island's salt and pepper shakers, wine glasses, and bottle of wine fall over, as the bottle slowly empties. Next to the spill is an eight-inch cutting knife and a fork which begin to slowly rotate horizontally. The salt and pepper shakers, wine glasses, and wine bottle easily roll and slide off the center island crashing on the floor spraying small glass pieces in all directions. As the wine from the bottle impacts with the floor, the liquid rapidly shoots up in a spray configuration causing a loud, ear piercing pissst-sound instantaneously converting to scorching steam. The husband and wife are directly effected by the intense burning steam, as they cry out their pain. The refrigerator magnets simultaneously detach and land neatly on the floor. The array of broken glass from the paper weight and glasses cover the floor. The pencils and napkins begin to float up twelve inches above the floor. The cutting knife and fork slowly spin and float just above the center island counter. The wife is leaning over the center island sink. She attempts to pour cold water from the faucet onto the burns on her arm to ease the excruciating pain, as her arm begins to welt. She turns on the water, and the water loudly shoots up in a spray configuration which instantly coverts to burning steam. She displays a tormenting loud shriek and quickly dashes away from the sink.
Just above the floor is an aerial display of the steak knife, fork, and stainless steel spatula slowly spinning horizontally in a gradual ascent. The pot of water on the center island burner is now an empty pot. The kitchen lights continuously flicker and there's a flash of light from the sky that fully illuminates the kitchen. The husband and wife are holding each other in ultimate fear and desperation. The wall clock shows the seconds hand has stopped. The wife looks out through the bay window and observes the swing set with an empty swing dancing back and forth. She frantically yells out in anguish realizing Janie has vanished. Where's my Janie?
Far, far out in space the satellite disengages its laser on this American suburban household, as the test concludes. The laser's disengagement creates a sensational, bursting, spherical-shaped flash traveling almost forever in space. The effects of the laser burning out causes a tremendous, geomagnetic interference with earth's atmosphere.
Chapter 2
SPIES AMONG CHINA
From the window of an United Airlines jet entering China's mainland, one can view the breathtaking landscape concentrating on its sprawling mountains and beautiful countryside such as the Tien Shan Celestial Mountains and Bayan Bulak Natural Grasslands in Xinjiang province, the Mingsha Shan-Singing Sand Mountains in Gansu province, the Three Gorges-Vanished Wonder in Hubei province, and the green rice terraces in Ping An, Guangdong province. Approaching the destination of Nanning in Guangdong province, several inner city populations come into view. The landscape displays gross signs of water and air pollution caused by the industrial market boom.
The airliner closes in on the city of Nanning, south China with a wide view of the commuting bicycles, mopeds, scooters, motorbikes, taxis, trucks, buses, and people all in a great hurry to get somewhere with the same great intensity of an afternoon in midtown Manhattan. The street's intersection is without a traffic light to control the massive flow of daily chaos.
His name is Court, Harrison Court-006. A black-ops agent, from the NRO-national reconnaissance office which is a nonexistent sector of the CIA, on his way to visit his soon to be wife Missong in Nanning. He knows no boundaries, only enemies and has a license to kill. A man of many disguises he's every woman's hero and every foes nightmare. He's known to eliminate his assigned target-espionage is his game. Court is in his late thirties standing 5' 11". He's charismatic, cunning, intelligent, tenacious, daring, a sharp dresser, and a ladies man with a boldness who can think on his feet. He's the best the CIA has. He has short, dark hair and prefers a Rolex watch. His mission calls for his urgent presence in Hong Kong but first he must visit his China doll. Among Nanning's daily traffic rush is Court's taxi maneuvering through the busy, noisy, chaotic thoroughfare. The taxicab driver is making an asserted effort to get to his destination.
In the back seat of the taxicab Court is somewhat apprehensive about the transportation conditions, particularly a bustling intersection without a traffic light, yet he's confident and commanding in a
