About this ebook

The third book in the award-winning Timmy Quinn series...

On a remote island off the coast of Ireland, an unpiloted boat drifts ashore, watched by a man to whom the dead are something to be feared...

In a small stone chapel that stands hunkered against the vicious island winds, a woman whispers a frantic prayer to the gathering dark as something pale and dreadful scratches at the window.

A young girl races to the shore to meet her lover and finds something monstrous instead...

And in a confessional, a dead man waits to tell his sins...

A gunshot in a church in Los Angeles leads Tim Quinn halfway around the world and into a nightmare, for on Blackrock Island, he will find love, murder and madness, and discover an earth-shattering truth about the Curtain, and those who hide behind it.

Kealan Patrick Burke

Born and raised in a small harbor town in the south of Ireland, Kealan Patrick Burke knew from a very early age that he was going to be a horror writer. The combination of an ancient locale, a horror-loving mother, and a family full of storytellers, made it inevitable that he would end up telling stories for a living. Since those formative years, he has written five novels, over a hundred short stories, six collections, and edited four acclaimed anthologies. In 2004, he was honored with the Bram Stoker Award for his novella The Turtle Boy. Kealan has worked as a waiter, a drama teacher, a mapmaker, a security guard, an assembly-line worker at Apple Computers, a salesman (for a day), a bartender, landscape gardener, vocalist in a grunge band, curriculum content editor, fiction editor at Gothic.net, and, most recently, a fraud investigator. When not writing, Kealan designs book covers  through his company Elderlemon Design. A movie based on his short story "Peekers" is currently in development as a major motion picture.

VESSELS is perfect the way it is, but I did like the ending of THE HIDES about half a star more than I did this one.

In this volume, the third Timmy (Tim) Quinn book, I found myself reading about a whole other man, a darker individual than I'd previously known. The book opens with an admission of guilt from Tim's father. Anyone who's read the first two books will have seen this coming, but Burke finally gave us a definitive answer. The opening isn't quite as good as the prologue of THE HIDES either, but it fit.

Kim's back! I was ecstatic to see Tim's girlfriend return. Since I know there's a series coming about Tim and Kim's daughter I saw this coming eventually but didn't know which book to expect it in. Once again, Burke's character interactions shine brightly. You could feel the years of space between them mend like a tended wound. It was a lovely thing to witness; something Burke handled exceptionally well.

VESSELS does not wont for scares either. The first scene in the chapel... *shivers*. I've never had a jump scare in a book, but at the realization that there was nothing there anymore (when you read it, you'll understand that sentence) I flinched as if I'd been goosed by the boogeyman.

Oh, and Father Brennan is utterly terrifying. I have four words for you...

    Because I ate them.

I could drone on and on about Burke's style and flow and genius, but I've done that several times before. VESSELS does not disappoint, but THE HIDES is still my favorite in the series so far. Sorry, Kealan, you outdid yourself with the second book's opening and closing action. I'm looking forward to PEREGRINE'S TALE, and then it's off to finish the fight with NEMESIS.

I don't want it to end!

A must read if you are into the Timmy Queen series which took the story a stage further but like previous books finished with a lot of unanswered questions. So onwards to the next instalment called Peregrines Tale. I just wonder when it will eventually conclude! As usual this was exciting and built to a really good crescendo at the end.
