      I dedicate this book to my mother, Mattie Johnson Lee, my sister, Joyce Elizabeth Neaves, and my play mama’s, Thelma, Sweet Adeline, Elary, Lilly, Isabelle, Bea, Peggy, and Ella. My she-roes who taught me how to live, love, laugh, and survive.

      From them I learned that goodness and righteousness has its own reward, that faith, hope, and excellence are prerequisites for success, and that class and good taste are not defined by economic status. But the most important thing they taught me is that you can give in, and you can give out, but you can never give up.
