About this ebook
There are few countries that have a history of thousands of years, and none like Israel. As you read this journal, you will walk under the ancient archways of the land and stroll the walkways through old Jerusalem where Yeshua , Jesus, road a donkey one Palm Sunday. You will see shops in the old City of Jerusalem that reflect the history in living color as well as in life today. As in ancient days, the People of Israel do their daily business of selling goods and food. You will smile, you will laugh, and you will cry throughout these experiences. You will picture the Cafes where we sat and shared a meal with some IDF soldiers just coming from battle, and where they share the experience of the day. This is the land of The Messiah. Come, walk with my husband and I as we work, play, serve, and wonder, in the land before time, the Holy Land, Israel. Experience a divine appointment.

Dedication
196466.jpgKnow you the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts: if you seek him, he will be found of you.
—I Chronicles 28:9
The following stories are taken from my journal while volunteering in Israel from July 2007 to March 2009. More than just words, they are a definition of our lives, defined by hearing God’s call to obedience. This path has a finish line, but no map for direction or place of destination. This is a story of faith—a journey walking step by step with the strength of the Spirit of the Lord as our compass.
First, and foremost, I give thanks to the Most High God for calling us—my husband Leopoldo and me—to serve in Israel. A favorite saying of mine is, "We have a plan in life but He has the itinerary."
Secondly, I dedicate this book to my partner, best friend, and love of my life for over thirty-eight years, Leopoldo Martinez Luna Amaya, as a witness of our love. God has blessed me to share time and space with Leopoldo. He is a true servant, eager to help others in need and, when it seems impossible, he holds strong as a solid beam. From the moment we said I do, his encouragement and undying support has always been plentiful. We are a team!
I also want to say thank you to Ann Marie, who not only spent endless hours editing, but also taught me the valuable lessons of separating the wheat from the chaff
in putting my heart and soul on paper. Ann Marie and her husband Dudley are founders of Israel Food Outreach Ministry Inc., a ministry that serves Israel. They dedicate their lives to this endeavor. She is a true kindred spirit and friend; I am honored to call her a sister in Messiah.
Delores Feeken-Schmidt has recently launched Words by Dee, an independent copy reading, editing, and authoring service, which she anticipates will follow her into her retirement years. With her love of reading and writing, it’s the best of all worlds. She has taken my manuscript through the final editing process and brought my words to life and a new height. I am proud to say we have become friends through this process.
I also wish to express my gratitude to a dear friend, Dr. Ariel Linden, who not only encouraged me while preparing for my first trip to Israel, but also sparked the fire in my heart for his people. I am honored to call him haver (friend).
Thank you to the many volunteers, to friends, too many to mention, who inspired me along the way. Most of all, to the people of Israel who made this book happen.
Baruch HaShem!
Prologue
196275.jpgTo every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.
—Ecclesiastics 3:1
Stepping in faith doesn’t always require just one step. Every decision is heartfelt and no one knows what lies ahead or what sacrifices will be suffered to produce the blessings. What we do know is that we have great opportunities to walk daily in faith wherever we go and to do good wherever we can. Leopoldo and I were ready to walk that walk, but we sure didn’t have a clue how many steps we were to take. God had a plan.
It has been years since I felt the cobblestone streets beneath my sandals, however, reflecting on the experiences I encountered, it is ever more revealing how God’s hand moved in supernatural ways. As the nation continues to go through government changes, financial systems crash, and the strife over a two state proposal in Israel escalates. The main message of my book is not of the political view, but of the spiritual calling to walk in faith.
When we first returned to the USA in 2009, I was often asked the question, What was it like to live in the land of Israel?
For me to capture the heartbeat of the land, delicious aromas, and breathtaking sights, I needed to write a book. I read through some of my journal, along with multiple emails, piecing together events and recollections of emotions. The challenge was where to begin.
Upon reflection, it became clear to me that I would weave all of my experiences together. I would like to visualize my book as a blank canvas, and as I begin painting beautiful landscapes with each page, a portrait unfolds of a resilient and accomplished people. After all, living in Israel presents a smorgasbord of experiences.
You are about to embark on a journey filled with humor, sorrow, and chutzpah (audacity, courage). So, as we venture on this journey together, I hope you glean a better understanding of the people and the land, and find humor in some of the balagan (chaos). May a seed of desire be planted in your heart to visit Israel.
That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD has done this, and the Holy One of Israel has created it.

—Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
I gazed out the window as the plane descended from the clouds, over the wide blue sea, and thought of the thousands before me who came searching for answers, on ships bound for the land of promise, dreaming of a new life or seeking a miracle. Israel, the land of the Holy Bible, is a beacon of light to the nations and a lighthouse for those searching for spiritual enlightenment.
Finally, the wheels touched down, and we rumbled along the runway to a jolted stop. I took a deep breath. Oh, how I love Israeli air!
This was going to be our home for a year, or so I thought. Reminiscing the first time I came to Israel in 2003, I recalled how my heart danced with passion as our bus climbed the mountain, with the song playing in the background, going up to the mountain, going up to the house of the Lord.
Just as we turned a corner, my eyes beheld Jerusalem. I experienced that same euphoric feeling as I gave my passport to the agent.
Why are you here in Israel, and how long?
she asked. Smiling, I answered, "The Lord
