About this ebook

The most important book of the 19th Century is Charles Darwin's Origin Of Species, which presents Darwin's  Theory of Evolution. Darwin's Theory was generally attacked as being anti-religious, since it supposedly eliminates God as taking part in the development of life, which is presented as a blind and purposeless process..

This book presents evidence that to the contrary, Evolution is actually a guided and directed process. Natural Laws guide and direct Evolution, and are ultimately responsible for the existence of human beings. The name of the creator and sustainer of  Natural Laws always has been, and is, God.

Evolution as generally presented emphasizes competition,  and neglects the great importance of cooperation in the struggle for life. The possibility is examined that human life may be an evolutionary dead end. The importance and possibility of humanity's colonizing other worlds, is presenteded.

    Introductory Synopsis

In 1859 British Naturalist Charles Darwin published a book titled The Origin Of Species by Natural Selection, or the Preservation Of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life. This was the most important book of the 19th century, and this book’s subject, the relation of Evolution to God, is in important and direct relation to it.

Darwin’s book can be summed up as presenting evidence in support of a new scientific theory, called the Theory Of Evolution. The Origin Of Species presents overwhelming evidence in favor of the new Evolution theory, according to which species result by a process of natural selection; inherited characteristics are selected, by survival to reproduce, with the origination over time of new, different species. Different species are determined by sexual reproduction; fertile offspring are possible only among members of the same species.

Darwin’s evidence for evolution was based primarily on detailed considerations of biological phenomena he observed, and samples he gathered, during his 1831 to 1835 voyage as a naturalist on the sailing ship Beagle. The book is based peimarily on Darwin’s careful consideration of variation and adaptation, and in part on mathematical population growth considerations, such as those of Thomas Malthus’s Essay On Population, where population increase outstrips supply.

Darwin’s task during the voyage and afterwards was to determine the origin of species; that is, why and how the many different species, so exquisitely well adapted to their different environments, came about. The method of science is based on evidence, and evidence arises from the examination and comparison of factual information. Therefore he began by simply gathering data.

Darwin studied and sampled all the diverse animal and plant life he encountered, in the expectation that eventually a unifying principle would appear. That principle did appear; he called ot Evolution, and it admirably explained the origin of species, Darwin’s objective. Charles Darwin’s explanation of species origins is considered an achievement of major importance to biology.

However, the Theory Of Evolution contains implicit in it a new cosmic conception of humanity, that many found extremely disturbing, so disturbing that the new theory and Darwin were both viciously attacked for it. The new concept embodies a major reduction in the cosmic importance of humanity.

Before Darwin’s Theory Of Evolution, humanity was commonly viewed as the crowning glory of creation, the last and best creation of the Lord God, in which He looked upon His creation, and finding it good, was well satisfied. With The Theory Of Evolution humanity is reduced to being just one more animal among very many, humanity’s creation is presented as having coming about by purposeless forces, and God is (entirely) absent.

Evolution was ridiculed by critics for claiming humanity evolved from (lowly) monkeys. In fact according to Evolution man and monkeys are primates, and the primates are branches with a common ancestral tree, from which humanity branched off about ten million years ago. Then humans are related to monkeys not by descent, but by a common ancestor. This has not reduced the fervor with which Evolution has been, and is attacked.

The Renaissance findings of science generally reduced man’s cosmic importance.

For example, Galileo and Copernicus showed that the earth was not the universe’s center, and that our Sun was only one of very many. But Drwin’s theory that eliminated God in man’s origin was too much, and
